Finally refitted the hydraulic pump to the D3 and recommisioned the winch.

It was on my previous D3 but the new one (now 21/2 years old) had different hoses in front where I put the pump bracket, however a little replumbing which will be tidied up at a later date has sorted the problem.

I do not really know anything about hydraulic winches. Where does the hydraulic pressure come from?

On older vehicles, a pump was driven off a power takeoff shaft but I doubt that on the 3. There is also the possibility of off the power steering but ...

I know of one that was run off the power steering pump. Seemed to work ok.

pretty sure richard fitted a second hydraulic pump......

a mate of mines has a hydraulic winch running off his power steering, its all good until you need to steer........the winch just slows down until you finish turning the steering wheel, than all the energy is directed to the winch and she speeds up

I know Richard's one was separate he said so:

The one I meant was on disco3 forum and yes as weeds says the steering issue was the drawback. Worked ok in a straight line.

Richards is the better solution but the D3s steering pump is enough and even has a cooler.

That's the setup Weeds, on my first D3, the current one is the same but with different plumbing for the heater hose, when I have time I will get a stainless steel spool made up to take the place of a section of the hose.

I installed a 12,000 lb capacity hydraulic winch on my 3.0 litre D4. There isn't room to install a separate hydraulic pump (particularly as I have installed an air compressor in front of the battery) so it's powered by the power steering pump. The only hydraulic connection point was to cut the metal section of the power steering hose before the steering rack. Alas, I'm on a 5 week assignment to the US and so don't have photos to show.
