Flexi Coils or Stiffer Rate Rear Springs

Hi All,

I currently have +2" Dobinsons Coils all round with long travel Pro Comp shocks, whilst the flex is quite good, once the rear swaybar is disconnected the RL spring will drop out and not re-locate without a BFH.

My other problem is the rear is far too soft when carrying a load, it will bottom out quite easily which isn't good for my fridge. The whole rear end copped a beating on the Border Track on the long weekend and it was then I decided I have to change it.

I'm prepared to have a stiffer ride unloaded if it means my ride when fully loaded feels more stable.

My question is to fix both problems do I try to find some stiffer rate flexi coils or go for an uprated +2" spring and fit dislocation cones?
I'd like to keep a +2" height when the car is fully loaded rather than start with +2" unloaded and go down as its gets loaded up.

Why not look at poly bags?

Lovelles HD +2's are about +80mm without a load or their listed "weight accessories (front/rear bar, winch etc). They are stiffer but not harsh. I'm running them in a D2 with the only accessory a winch and cradle.

If your springs are dislocating, unless you get longer springs they will still dislocate because you have long travel shocks that go further than the springs.

So keeping the current long shocks and same spring length, you will need dislocation cones or maybe you could tie the springs in to stop dislocation.

As mentioned, to keep the softer springs and get load handling you could ad poly airbags inside the springs and then get the best of both worlds.

Will PolyAirBags effect articulation at all?

I'd still need to change the spring as I wouldnt be able to run dislocation cones with polybags from what I understand.

I'll do a search on PolyBags in the meantime.

Bags won't affect travel per se but you'll have to watch the hose, you may need to leave extra hose at the top above the top spring plate but perhaps have it on a elestic strap to pull it back up into the hole so it doesn't get pinched but the bag.

I spoke with Shane from suspension stuff recently about the problem of keeping offroad articulation while being able carry a heavy load for longer trips away, all whilst keeping a comfortable ride for day to day duties. Flexy coils have the extra length to use long travel shocks without dislocating and without the need for relocation cones you can use polyair bags and inflate them only when needed(with heavy loads).
Shane did say at the moment he is working with a new manufacturer to develop and produce flexy coils for both front and rear of discovery1.
At the time he couldn't give any details re: spring length, rates or expected lift gained but expected to have them for sale July-ish

If your springs are only dislocating slightly you could run a retainer plate in the top and upgrade your bottom retainer 6-8mm bar instead of the crappy stock item otherwise it will bend. This wont limit your travel and You should be able to set something up that wont interfere with the poly bag.

After doing further research, this is the method I' leaning towards. Flexi coils and Air bags. Air bags should keep rear stable enough to get rid of sway bar altogether. :)
