Hi all

I scored a Terrafirma Steel transmission guard TF856 which is meant to fit my model Defender (1998 TDi).

I have spend the past 2 nights trying to work out how it fits. It is a big bugger and quite heavy, so lying on the cold concrete for an hour has not been fun.

I have fitted heaps of other Terrafirma bits without a problem so I am stumped with this one.

Anyone out there fitted one before?

Thanks heaps
Andrew

A few pics of it where its meant to go would help.

are you sure its for the TDI and not the TDCI which is the puma?

the puma has a transmission guard because part of it is now vunerable...a few of us have one fitted from Devon 4x4

i think you will find dullbird is correct. that part number is for tdci defenders (known as puma's here)

Here are some pictures

The Terrafirma catalogue I have states that the TF856 fits Defender pre 2007. The label on the guard shows Defender 300TDi/TD5 Here is a link to there website: http://www.terrafirma4x4.com/products_php.php?cat=47&grp=270

The guard from the Puma is a small looking unit - similar to Newhue's recent post in the members section.

Here are some pictures.

I assumed the folded end with the 4 large holes was to face the rear of the vehicle.

I thought the two holes on the belly of the plate would line up with the gearbox cross member tabs, but no luck there either. I think there is a difference between 110 and 130 gearbox cross members.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Andrew

That's a solid piece of engineering, and yes completely different to a tdci's, or Devon 4x4's version of a puma trans guard anyway.
You'd imagine the vent holes go to the front, so if nothing marries up then maybe it's a wrongly supplied or labelled product.

Wouldn't hurt to send Terrafirma an email asking for a fitting description. I know that's an insult to you intelligence, but the trials of life.:D

The Supplier sent a picture to me of a TDi Defender, but the gearbox cross member had a couple of holes in it and the actual gearbox mounted off the chassis side rails - is this a 110? My model 130 has the gearbox mounts attached to the cross member.

So....nothing beats "sleeping on it" overnight, then the next day, get out the grinder and the welder and modify...

Nice colour?

I'm just getting one priced and it's in the order of $A360. At that price I don't expect to have to do any modifying.

Is it for a 110 or a 130?

Andrew, had any luck fitting the guard?

Yep..all fitted and some modification. As well modifying it to fit the 130, I also ended up putting some 20 x 10 flat bar as a rib/web across the plate to help minimise deflection.

I'll get some more pictures on the weekend.

Here is a picture of the top side of the guard showing the additional bracing and you can see the joins from where I modified the existing guard to fit the 130. (i didn't worry too much about the neatness of these joins as you won't see them)
