Auto box oil change

Gday All,

Was reading last night in the D3 service manual that an oil change can be done on the auto box, but seems as tho you only get about 4ltrs out.

This is done without dropping off the plastic pan, I assume that this is only about half to 2/3rds of the auto trans oil.

Has anyone tried this ?

If so did you notice any difference ? am just thinking with only 63,000ks on mine this may be an option instead of the sump change. I guess the unknown is the condition of the filter element.

Condition of the filter doesn't matter really.
Just 4 litres by its self at your Kms is good enough.
I change out tractor oil without hydro filter , all the
time , and everything is better than not doing
anything . In a year or two , this is all my D3
will be getting.

Gearbox capacity is 9.5 litres so less than half the oil is being changed - hence I guess the need to do a mega flush to change the lot.

Would be a good preventative oil change to be done every 36,000 -48,000km with the full service at 96,000km.

I am not having any issues as yet, but cant see why changing oil in this way every 50,000 ks would cause anything other than good.

My Brother in Law is the ZF marine agent in Darwin so am getting him to price me the ZF oil..should be interesting.

The only gotcha is the filling method which requires the oil to just drip out of the fill plug at a particular temp, requires OBD reader or infra red thermometer on the oil to measure correct temp.

Was thinking about that, but thought if I measured what came out and put the same back in then it should be close, especially if its a 9 ltr system..

I do have an infra red thermometer, but seems a pain of a way to do it..

I would have thought that you wouldve got atleast 6-7 ltrs out of the sump, but the manual says 3-4 ltrs is all that will come out..


If I can get the oil before I go back to sea, and get the time, I will give it a try.

The GM box in the L322 is the same,if the fluid is not at 35 degree's you won't get the level right.Mine took almost 2ltres more fluid after doing it correctly. Pat

I know it's difficult to do it at home,but the guys at MR auto flush the system and get most of it out.Maybe worthwile getting it done as then it is done properly.

The GM box in the L322 is the same,if the fluid is not at 35 degree's you won't get the level right.Mine took almost 2ltres more fluid after doing it correctly. Pat Your box took another
half a gallon , when it was temp adjusted ? Not in that box , unless you
totally underfilled it in the first place.
