swivel housing

hi i would like to know if it is possible that my landrover 300 tdi 1998 does not have a level or drain plug on the front swivel housings ive read that the top plug is a square top which i located , but im unable to locate any other plugs with square tops they just dont seem to be there did they change fronts between 97/98 models i know the manual shows the drain plug but im at a loss where it is maybe behind caliper? any help would be appreciated .Cheers

Yes they deleted the drain and level plugs afer 1997. A backward step IMO.

yep, a maintenance nightmare....

its all good so long as you keep adding in and correcting the level of the grease that leaks out...

but when it gets water in there its a strip down job to sort it...

when you do that the first time goto an engineering place and have them drill and tap in the drain bung.

thanks guys i thought i was going mad as i could not find the plugs one further question can i top up swivels with swivel grease without replacing oil once again thanks. cheeres

Yes you can stick more LMM type CV/ swivel grease in, it'll just migrate through into the differential anyway over time so that is a good idea anyhow. but as Dave says if there is any evidence of water in there best pull it to bits and rectify before it does some damage to the swivel bearings and CV, we also drill drain plugs in them if we get them off for any reason.
