Rear end protection

What is the better stone gaurd to protect my D3? The company I bourght my camper off sell the type that goes on the draw bar to deflect stones, and OL have a mud flap sort of idea that the tow bar hitch goes through for its fixing point and has two large angled back flaps. .

Which one gets the most ticks, will be buying either
one tomorrow

I made my own to protect the rear window.

I used clear polycarbonate sheet from a supplier of engineering plastics.

It is easy to cut with a fine tooth jig saw.

I used Velcro to fix the sheet to the back window.

Cost around $100.

My Kimberley Karavan had built in stone deflectors but I still didn't trust them as much as a plastic sheet across the whole back window.

Do you find the stone deflectors on the camper get in the way when accessing the front box on camper especially when covered in mud ? Like the polly idea, I have a 4mm sheet in the shed.

While not pretty or cheap this is the best stone guard available that I have found for a number of reasons including protecting both the camper and the vehicle from stones, dust, wet tar etc. Check out the U-tube links at the bottom of the Stone Stomper front page.

Hi Guys,

Here is a picture of the window protector fitted.

I cut it out to generally follow the line of the window.

Two long Velcro strips are fitted on the LH and RH vertical edges and a few strips on the top and bottom horizontal edges. I cut a slot in the shield to allow the rear window wiper shaft to slide though. I don't use the wiper of course.

There are strategically placed little plastic pads on the shield to prevent it rubbing on the window since it is curved. As a precaution I have 2 holes near the top edge with some nylon string tied to the shield that then fixes to the tailgate hinges just in case the shield come away from the Velcro. It never fell off yet.

Dust will collect between the window and shield but I can't see out of the rear window anyway when we go camping - too much stuff piled in the back plus the van covered up the rear view.

I sold my Kimberley Karavan so I don't need the protector anymore. If you are interested send me a PM and an offer. I can supply Velcro to stick to you rear window as well.

Your wright there not pretty and a pain to get in and out of the back of your car while attached ( not the one you decided on I hope after that payout , if so ,WOW they look good ) The one Im looking at is the Rock Tamers. I dont know any body with a set to quiz. I didnt end up buying them today and might end up just building a guard on the draw bar.

From what I have read the rock tamer types of stone guards quite often don't stop stones smashing vehicles back windows as the rocks that exit behind the tow vehicle can and do bounce off of the camper/caravan and hit the back of the tow vehicle. The Stone Stomper trapeze type of guard dramatically limits that happening.

The people I know with Stone Stompers swear by them as being the best stone guards they have ever had, so that is why I put up the link to them in the first place.

As for payouts thats no problem, each to their own, in reality I would rather have something that works and is not pretty rather then something that looks good but isn't that functional.

Yep your right thats why I had a defender except I thourght it looked great but to own one you have to have thick skin and a sence of humor, good on ya mate thanks for the info:)
