Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to modify the electrics in the front windows to go down all the way without needing to keep your hand on the button? My previous car, which I wrote-off by running into a tree, was fantastic in that the windows went down all the way with one press of the button, and went down probably twice as fast as my disco's windows. Can this be done to the disco's windows?

Just push & release the front window down button/s to make the window go all the way down without having to hold the button down until the window is all the way down. That's alot of down ... ;)

Doesn't work for the rear windows.

Shouldn't need modding.
Thought they all did that anyway, I know mine does, as per Fluids post.

I'd like exactly the opposite,to make windows go all the way up with a simple press off the switch,an electronic guru around here?

Thanks Guys. Well I have only just got the car and I dont reckon thats working then, but I will have more of a play.

And yes Fatman, thats what i really want to but thought I'd get shot down by everyone cos of the "dangers" etc. My old Navara had auto up as well and if something got in the way, it just cut off.

Hey guys,

Just my 2c worth (or is that 5c now?).

IIRC this is one of those "dealer configurable" options. It's one of the things that is set in the Body (I think) ECU. Along with other useful things like DRL, and ignition key warnings, and auto lock at speed, and and ..... There's lots more.

On the latest incarnations of Range Rover some of these options can be configured through the Touch screen/MID.

Depending upon your vehicle this is probably alterable with a Nanocom (don't know, never used one) but certainly can be with a suitable Faultmate.

If all else fails, your local dealer/stealer can do it for you.

There's a safety issue if the windows went up automatically by "one touch". This can be set anyway though if you really want. If they haven't been setup/reset properly for the anti-jam then serious injury could occur if something got caught (like a small child or adult appendage).

Yep Barney, I know some cars do both up and down "one touch" by default. As one who has been "bitten" (the bruising took over two weeks to fade) by a poorly set window mechanism I'm a little wary of them now.

The lack of one-touch for the rear is also a safety feature. Its an attempt to reduce the possibility of a small child exiting the car accidentally. One could imagine the potential result if the switches in the rear are not isolated and a small child were to trigger the window down all the way with just a single, brief press while the car is moving at speed. Similar reasons to have those "child safety" tags to isolate the locks on the rear doors too.

Happy to be corrected by those with greater and more intimate knowledge.

Cheers,
Iain

Yeah thanks and I fully agree. I dont want the back windows done, especially as my two little kiddies sit in there. All I want it for is those 4wdriving situations where you're flat out steering and see that massive wash of water spraying all over your car and you want it keep all "over" not all "inside"!!!!! Thanks, ill have a look into it. Have to take it to TRS sometime to get some parts might see if he can change it for me.

I think from a saftey point of view, that's a dangerous move. If anyone has an arm, or a child has their head out the window

With my D2a one press will drive it down manually; two presses will put it down automatically without keeping a finger on the button. Both driver side and passenger side front windows.

Most Jap cars have auto up and down on the driver's side (my 1998 Mazda and 2004 Honda and other's Jap cars are like that ). For toll booths and other drive through arrangements.

I'd prefer an auto up feature as well, but safety is always a concern with this. I guess that if someone is pressing the button up, then if there is a problem, they can stop / reverse it.

When I got mine I also thought the auto-down wasn't working but found I had to more "stab" the button than actually press it, i.e. press it very briefly.

Yep, that's the way mine works.

A short (less than a second) press and it moves automagically.

Hold the button for more than a second and it only moves while you continue pressing the button.

Makes sense to me. Why keep holding the button if what you want is full travel? Just tap the button to get it started.

A quick press will make front windows go all the way down which seems to be reverse thinking to other car manufacturers which require a long press to do same function. I am always getting caught out in my work hilux expecting a quick press will drop window all the way down. Auto up would be a great option, my ex wifes holden astra has auto up and down, and I believe on all windows.
Cheers Matt

What would be nice is a remote all windows up(and I suppose down) function, not by default every fob lock though,,,

I remember Alien D2 (Kyle) telling me that there is a very handy mod you can do with a Nanocom where you can extend the 'on' time of your elec windows after switching the ignition off. This allows you to wind the windows up after you take the keys out of the ignition.....a very common occurance....

Umm, Guys (Pedro?),

Check your owner's manual. For most modern beasts (RR/RRS/D2/D3/D4/FL) you'll find an option called "lazy locking".

By holding pressed the lock button on your remote you can close the windows and sunroof when you lock up the car.

Alternately (on some) if you do the same thing you can crack open all the windows and sunroof. I've used that on some of the really hot days. It takes just enough of the edge off a furnace like interior to make it bearable to get in and start, and before the air con kicks in.

Cheers,
Iain

I have checked owners manual and there is no mention of "lazy locking" for D2, I have had cars that allow you to close all windows from outside of car with key held to one direction in door lock, great feature for when kids forget to close windows.

Alrighty then Matt,

I stand corrected on that one then [bigwhistle]. Sorry for misleading you.

Maybe I'm getting it confused with the ability to start the car, leave it running, and lock it using a spare key, so that you can return to a nice warm car. Real handy for cold climates. It sure made the early mornings, with the thermometer well south of zero, a lot better for me.

Still pretty sure most of the cars built since the mid 2000's have "lazy locking". I know the P38's (00/01/02 certainly) and L322's have it. All of the D3/D4/RRS's have it I'm reasonably sure. The FL2 has it but maybe not FL1. Deefer's are lucky to get remote locking, let alone anything fancy like "lazy" locking. Deefer's aren't for the lazy.

Also, it tends to be one of those "dealer programmable" things like so many other annoying little quirks, so even if it is capable it might not be enabled.

A Nanocom/Faultmate would certainly tell you.

Apologies to the mods, as this has strayed a little off the original topic of windows.

Cheers,
Iain

Just out of curiosity, I just tried the 'lazy locking' thing with the windows.

My disco is a 2001 ES and when I press and hold down the lock key on the fob, it brings the headlights on for about 15 seconds - guess this is an alternative to the windows winding up automatically?

Pedro_The_Swift

Yea, the headlights is one of many things that caused the D3 to be awarded all over the world for owner security.;)
