I am on the first day of our trip and the defender has a loud whining noise only under load, going up hills, and accelerating in lower gears.
Ideas? Have recently changed all hoses, belts, tie rod ends, new radiator, cleaned intercooler, new shocks, new steering drop arm. Plus changed all fluids.
Currently heading towards Armidale.

One of your intercooler hoses has come loose.

Perfect diagnosis Martyn, exactly the same happened to me. Sort of sounds a bit like a really small electric motor going off under load

And I thought this was a post about carrying teenage children in the rear cargo area....:D

Certainly sounds like an air leak somewhere though...

Having experienced both - It could be kids in the back but they normally whine under all driving conditions :D:D

When you say whining - is it like a "slipping fan belt" squealing noise but at around 2500 to 3000 RPM under load? If so, then it could be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket......
