OK, I can find loads of dual battery threads for the D3 and similar, but what I can't find is one with the model number of the Optima that fits!

Can anyone with one fitted tell which model they used please? Varta finally died well out of warranty....

Should mention I did find a thread on the D4 saying it was a D34, but I have no idea of the battery box is the same size...and I thought the box had been filled with stuff on the D4 anyway?

Hi Jeff, with the D4, you have three options, one is to move the components around in the auxiliary battery box on the diver’s side, two is to install a battery tray in the space just in front of the cranking battery compartment and three is to fit a battery in the rear cargo compartment.

With option three you can fit a much bigger battery.

The first two options suit the use of the Optima D34.

Sorry, probably didn't make it 100% clear what I was after - which is the Optima model number that fits in the spare battery box in the D3!

Is that still the D34?

Is it just a coincedence that they called it a "D34" and that it fits a D3&4??? Spooky:p

I have D34 Optima in the spare box area. Just made a strap to go across the top at an angle and two threaded rods to reach the conveniently located caprive nuts. I ran both + and - crank aperage cables across the rear to the main battery. With the Optima in place there is jist enough room to mount a Sidewinder battery controller.

Hi Martin, You can get the genuine Land Rover battery bracket and bolts from any dealer at a reasonable price and they fit the Optima D34 perfectly

I’m not sure why you would run a negative from the other side of a D3, D4 or RRS as there is a battery earth stud right near where you have mounted the Optima.

Furthermore, you say it’s from the crank “aperage” cables and I’m not sure what that means but if you have sourced your neg at the cranking battery’s negative terminal, you need to remove it. Connecting to the cranking battery’s negative terminal is a NO-NO on these vehicles.

Last but not least and a word of warning, while there are quite a few isolators on the market that work well, you need to keep an eye on that one you have, they have the highest failure rate of any isolator I have ever come across.

Is this D34 a "deep cycle" battery ?
If not - what "deep cycle" batteries do owners on here recommend ?

cheers

Primarily a Deep Cycle battery but with the ability to start as well :)

Optima yellow top AGM batteries are ideal for all cycling applications.

Optima yellow top AGM deep cycle batteries have spiral cells wound up and press into tubes. this allows the use of lead in its purest form. There are no additives giving Optima Deep cycle batteries a longer shelf life, from 12 - 18 months.
Optima Yellow top AGM deep cycle batteries are ideal for auxiliary batteries in Four wheel drives and Caravans, because of their rapid recharge rate. A D27F yellow top Deep cycle battery will charge in 35 minutes from 100% flat (10.5 volts) using a 100 amp alternator. this is up to six times faster than most deep cycle batteries.
An Optima yellow top AGM battery is 15 times more resilient to vibration than conventional batteries. This is ideal for those corrugated roads that four wheel drives often face.

Many Emergency vehicles use the Optima Yellow top AGM batteries as they have high start power as well as being deep cycle batteries to run their high drawing accessories.

The Optima yellow AGM batteries are spill proof, Corrosion resistant, no gassing under normal charging conditions & Completely maintenance free. An Optima AGM battery is non hazardous and can be shipped by air.
Optima deep cycle batteries carry a 3 year full warranty for all models for private use, 2 year commercial use for the D31 range and 1 commercial use for smaller yellow tops.
The Optima AGM batteries has the ability to hold a higher voltage during the discharge cycle making it possible to use 100% of the stored power in the Optima compared to ordinary batteries.
Due to Optima deep cycle batteries slow discharge rate, they are ideal for seasonal use.
