View Full Version : Best place to sell D3?

Hi Folks,
I am toying with the idea of selling my D3 privately, and buying a D4.

Where do you reckon the best place to sell it? EvilBay, FadingPost, Drivel, etc? :wasntme:

I have a feeling that trading my D3 in with all the options I installed, won't get me a fair deal.

Thoughts and opinions welcome!

Thanks,
Rob

I don't know what their costs are like but I bought my wife's car from carsales. etc I don't expect too many D3 buyers to be looking in Evilbay or fadingpost.

Carpoint.com.au
Or why would you not try on this web site??

Rob, definately go private sale.
I would try carsales.com.au. Have had good success with them.
People are more likely to appreciate the hard earned that you have invested in your fine piece of machinery.

Rob,

I'm in the same boat and am confident of selling my D3 privately for far more than what I couldv'e got as a trade in. The dealer wouldn't make me an offer on a trade-in unless I told what the payout was, so I didn't bother.

I'm using AULRO, Carsales, Carsguide and Trading Post.

Be patient though. There are quite a few used D3's for sale and they seem to hold their price, but there's fewer buyers in this price bracket.

Cheers,

Mark

Buyers of D3 are often on these Sites . Now you've warned them
and they'll check out all the history .......... :wasntme:

I've got nothing to worry about Neil... changing service agents seems to have fixed all the problems I initially had. That and Land Rover changing design on the HPFP about 3 times on MY07+.

Rob,

Have you considered removing some of the accessories so you could put them back into a new D4 ?

If you are not getting value for them and assuming they would fit that might be one way to go.

I think a D3 with accessories will appeal to a few but might spook other who think that would mean it has been used a lot off road.

No particular opinion about which is the best way to sell it but for some reason I would be reluctant to buy a vehicle via ebay.

Regards,

George

Before we bought our D4 we looked at second hand D3's. We found a nice one, but it was fitted with the long range fuel tank and spare wheel carrier. I thought this was great - however, my wife refused to even consider it as she was concerned that this meant the vehicle was either used for long range towing or a lot of outback touring.

In our house my wife always carries the veto power:(

We actually used carsales & drive.com to do most of our research -which landed us at the dealer we eventually bought the D4 from.

I sold my D3 (which was kitted out) easily through Carsales.com.au - although had alot of interest through this site too.

Yeah Jonesy the dealers don't seem too keen... when looking seriously at a trade on a new set of wheels in recent weeks, they told me the HSE was too high end for them to yard so tried to place it and no one was interested. Trade came in from $18k to about $25k which was ridiculous and stopped the deal.

Private sale is the way to go for sure.. I've bought and sold a load of vehicles on fleabay with great success and everyone always checks out carssales.

Happy selling!

Sold my D3 on carsales. Got the money I wanted without any haggling. Heaps of calls, even up to 2 weeks after it had sold.
The bloke that bought it was from Mt Gambier (I'm from the Mornington Peninsula) and paid for it it full, sight unseen. All I had to do was take it to a transport company in Melbourne.
Dream deal.
Having said this, I also bought a car years ago (since sold) on fleabay for the wife from Sydney. Never had a problem with it.
Cheers, Craig.

Thanks again everyone! :BigThumb:

I'll be busy this weekend, taking out: aux battery setup, Optima D34, DVD-stereo/2-DIN dash fascia/steering wheel interface/iPod interface/amp/sub/speakers, side protection bars, one roof bar (it has 3), and Rasta alloy sump guard off - and putting standard bits back on.

I'll then move the aux battery setup, amp/speakers/sub (if possible), side protection bars and roof bar (after I get new Rhino tracks!) over to D4.

Now I have seen carsales, I have a pretty good idea what I should ask for it.

Thanks!

Thinkbig, in order to overcome your wife's veto powers you could try withholding sex!
On a less relevant matter, I think the selling price on carpoint/ sales is only about $40 - $50 until you sell it (correct me if I'm wrong - I'm married so I'm used to it)

Thanks Didge - I'll take the suggestion on board (don't see how once a year will make a difference though:D).

I shouldn't complain though - she passed on the second hand D3, but settled for a brand new D4:)

bwhahahhahaha - you make me laugh! Sounds like my place except for the D3/ 4!! Mine busts my cods everytime I suggest spending money on the old dear. Mind you, I do have some minor leverage now that I'm up for a min $4500 bill for a gearbox for her 2000 model RAV4. Makes getting toys for the Def see rather trivial.

Im looking at buying at the moment. I've been looking at Cars on drive, carsales and carpoint and i've noticed that most people who ask too much drop their price after a couple of months. That indicates to me that although the prices seem to be high, it dosent mean that they are moving the stock off. Thats probably why offers around 20k are prevelant from the car yards. If you can afford to wait fine, but if not price it for sale.

By the way i prefer carpoint because the pricing seems more realistic on that site.

Good Luck

Just to close this thread out...

I put my 07MY D3 SE TDV6 up for sale on carsales.com.au over two weeks ago. In that time, I have received one phone call. I dropped the price by $3k over that time.

Sick of the lack of response, I traded in today and got within a few thousand of what I was selling it for. Selling privately is just not worth the hassle sometimes.

If all goes to plan, I'll move into a new D4 2.7 next Thursday.

Now to put some accessories on eBay.

There's alot of folk out there who aren't buying anything , but waiting
for the sky to fall in , at the moment . I think there's a few years
of crap coming our way soon ...........

You shouldn't have any engine problems with that 2.7

Thanks Neil - I hope not... had enough engine problems with the D3.

Hi Dom,
I have just about sold everything. I only have a few things left:

Rasta alloy sump guard - fits all D3 models. Take off the plastic sump guard and put in storage. 8mm aluminium. One year old - light marks on it which would wash off. $250 (RRP $595)
Late model grippy cup holders (as shown here): http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic40985.html) (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic40985.html%29) $10
Black side protection bars - fits all D3 and D4. A couple of dents/love kisses/missing paint underneath - from playing at Mt Walker. $300 (RRP$1500+)

Cheers,
Rob
