View Full Version : Extended "nose cone"

Multiple questions, so bear with me please!

On some Defenders, the nose cone (the metal the front grill screws into) sits flush with the front of the wings and on others it sticks out.

I'm led to believe this is for UK vehicles with aircon, but this may be incorrect info, so I have a few questions:

First, what is the proper name for this part so I can search better for it?

Next, does anyone know which vehicles had the extended version and what it was for?

Last, anyone know where there is one for sale? ;-)

I need it so I can run a full width intercooler along with the aircon radiator.

Thanks

Is it all TD5's or just all Australian TD5's? Reason for asking is I've seen a few pics in the UK mags on vehicles of an age making them TD5's that don't always seem to have them!

Good question, and I'm not totally up to speed with it, but I was under the impression like you that the extended facia was to fit the AC condensor. I'm not sure if all TD5's in Aus have AC or if it is a part of the AC fitment.

Thanks all, very interesting. My TDi doesn't have one but if other County's and TDi's do, it can't just be the aircon the TD5 that necessitated it!

IIRC though, the TD5 has a full width intercooler, whereas the TDi's don't, and the County obviously doesn't have one at all so I can't see why anything other than a TD5 (and maybe Puma but I've never seen under the bonnet of one) would need one when I think about it a bit more??

Interesting....do you know what changed post 2004? Did aircon go from dealer fit to factory fit or something?

That's definitely it, but why would a County need it? You've just got the usual full length rad where the TDi's have the narrower rad + intercooler, plus the aircon rad in front, haven't you?

Counties with A/C had them. Same panel as others, just moved forward to fit the condensor and fans.

As Kaa says. Introduced with the first 110s to allow aircon, and fitted to aircon vehicles since (and I think standardised on all some time after 2000. Note that you can fit aircon without it, but things are a bit tight, so it will not be fitted to all dealer installed aircon 110s (and of course all comments apply to the 90 as well).

My 94 V8 110 has this, it's an Aussie import. Funnily enough, in Japan they call this protruding grill the "Koala Nose" ! But I don't think it's unique to Australia - seems to be common to all ROW spec Defenders with aircon fitted.

Countys with AC had the extended nose cone. Counties and one-tens without AC had the flush-fitting nose cone. Note that the extended nose cone is fibreglass, the flush version is alloy.

All 200 and 300Tdis had the flush nose cone.

All TD5s I have seen had the extended nose cone - but I doubt any/many were sold without AC.

Pumas - as for TD5.

I don't know if the TD5 and puma version is glass or alloy.

If you have a bull bar,you may need to trim the lower inside flats on the uprights for clearance.

Land Rover part number is ALR1522 (MUC6112 has been superseded by it)

Well. You learn something everyday. I didn't know that, so just went outside and checked on both Counties. Yep, they certainly are fibreglass.

Pretty sure it's only the later model Td5s that have them fitted. (As well as the Countys and Pumas)

I tracked one down from the wreckers in Queensland

I just asked for the front grill surround on a late model Defender. Quite a few people try and get hold of them so it's more than likely the man on the other end of the phone will know what your talking about

I have a TJM winch bar on my Defender and the grill surround fitted straight on, no mods necessary. ARB bars may be different

extended nose was to allow a harrison[GM] a/c system.this was standard on australian county.its not in the UK parts books.

the system is from USA or canada depending on who you ask.not that good-its actually probably very good in canada.the system has a old large R12 sepentine condencor and a range rover type twin electric fans.to allow room to fit this in the bonet lock stay is changed and the extended nose is to allow for the fan and stay assembly.

V8 used the 4 piston GM compressor, the 4BD1 uses a old SD508 sanden pump.the hoses are not the easiest to fit as they are modified in V8 pipes.

some cab chasis are fitted with the condencor and compressor and roof top or an AMC evaporator.

there are different non A/C alloy panels for different climates.some with 1 or 2 added holes at the bottom.

after australian assembly finished defenders use AMC systems fitted by the dealer.these are not UK supplied.the sanden parralel flow R134A condencor and fan is rarebut is made up of parts from another cheep to obtain car.slight cutting is reqired and a saftey lock protection plate to fit this unit.

this modern unit is small and very efective.the tubes run across 5-10 at a run allowing the liquid to fall to the bottom.however you cant repair of clean these and they should be checked with a laser temp gun for restrictions.
