View Full Version : D4 3.0TD Fuel Consumption

Just wondering what fuel consumption guys are getting in a mix of city/freeway driving?
My folks have only had their D4 for 8 weeks and are getting around 12.0- 12.5L/100km in a mix of city/freeway driving and are a little disappointed with the fuel economy. Their previous Merc ML 320 3lt Diesel would regularly get under 10L/100km.
The vehicle has only 2500km on the clock so could it be it just needs to run in some more? or some adjustments at the first service?
I know it weighs more and has more power and torque than the ML but the AS fuel economy put it more frugal than the Merc.
Maybe my old man has just developed a heavy right foot...
Any ideas appreciated.

Craig,
my D4 HSE now has 12,000k on the clock. Mix of city/country returns me 9.3 l/100. I have just returned from a trip Bundaberg to Brisbane (mix of open road and holiday traffic) @ 7.9 l/100 km.
Cheers

48K kms and rural driving (45kms to town) shows anywhere between 10 and 11.5. I don't unduly waste time but always try to conserve fuel. I think the consumption is too high for the gentle treatment its given, especially when compared to what's reported for 2.7s. Mine doesn't have a DPF so no excuses there.

I did a trip to Melbourne & back (from the Mornington Peninsula) on Friday after filling up with a full tank. When I arrived home, the display was showing 8.8Lt per 100Klm's.
Around town with the odd towing trailers here and there, it shows 11.5 or there abouts.
Interesting though, when I first bought the D4 3.0Lt, I went on a holiday towing my 2 Ton boat. At that stage I had only travelled 1,200Klm. Did the same trip 12 months later after travelling 45,000Klm's, and it used around 1 Lt per 100Klm's more.
In my opinion, I don't think that the economy will improve.
Cheers, Craig

My RRS 3.0 has done about 3,500. It is starting to become more fuel efficient.
Started at around 12/l per 100, but is now averaging 10.2l/100 on a 15:85 mix of highway and town driving.

Are these figures you guys are quoting from your trip computer, or are you actually recording km's & litres used and calculating your real fuel economy the old fashioned way ??
Me thinks some of these trip computers might be somewhat optimistic ...
8L/100Km is 35mpg .... really ??

My trip computer says 9.3L/100km since new, now at 11,500kms. Actual figure is 10.2L/100km. I keep log books for trips and fuel purchased and used. I'm happy with that - 80% highway, 20% short trip and traffic with a 750kg trailer used over 2,500kms of that time. 3.0L D4.

you would have upset the owner of the local petrol station when you traded the v8 peter.

Here are my fuel/distance records for those who are into statistics. :P It's an export from an Android App I use called aCar.
Most of the driving is around town (<10 km trips) and you can see where the economy is a lot better for those long distance trips on highways.
For those who like Litres/100km, then the data is there for you to massage as well. Sorry for the American date format.
[Edit - just looked at the formatting and it is terrible! I will update it tonight for you all]

Craig I haven't done a 'proper' consumption check - just using the in-car Guess-brand computer, but my RRS 3.0 gets around 12l/100 around town, and about 9 on the open road.
Towing a one-tonne camper trailer for 5,000 km at an overall average speed of 75-odd, it was up to 14.5, but that included some pretty heavy duty sand and creek-crossing work. (Mind you, it has had the ECU re-mapped, which is sure to add something to consumption figures.)
Then again, I've never been overly concerned with consumption per se, it's more about range for me. I just wish the tank was bigger, like my Prado - I loved that 180 litre tank, even if it was petrol.

I have done just over 5000 km in my D4 3.0 SE and I am averaging 9.8 to 10.0 lt/100k on the computer. I have not yet worked out any actual figures from fuel and distance but when you do this, youhave to correct for speedo error, which is about 4 to 5% on my Disco. Mynormal daily run is around 50 km to work and 50km back, mostly on 100kmh and 110kmh freeways. I am not known for my light foot and I normally cruise 3 to 5 kmh over the limit if the traffic is light.
I have noticed that if I take the coast road home, with an 80 kmh limit, my average consumption drops dramatically. The mathmatical formula for air drag is a function of the square of the speed, so this is to be expected. The difference between 100 kmh and 110 kmh is also quite dramatic.
This is still very impresive fuel use for a 2.7 tonne vehicle shaped like a small block of flats.
Cheers
Al

Whats weird is driving at 100kms my trip computers says its doing 6.9L/kms on the instant mode. As soon as the freeway kicks to 110kms, it jumps to 8.2L....
That 10kms speed increase make s big difference!
I have done this test several times now going down south, overall with the mix driving it really averages a proper 9ish litres per the 100kms.

Whilst my speedo is 5 kph optomistic at 100 kph, the odometer has matched the freeway speedo checks the few times I've checked. Hence on mine at least there would be no adjustment for distance travelled.

Hi all, did a four hour round trip today, mainly freeway at 105kph.
The car puter was showing 8.3Lt per 100Klm's when I returned.
Pretty happy with that.

There is a setting in the CCF (car config file) for the speedo offset. As standard on my D4 it is set at +3.5%+2kph. It does not appear to affect the odometer accuarcy. Likewise there is a setting for the fuel consumption in the ccf, I think mine was set at +5% from the factory but re set it to 0%. You will need a BBS MSV2 to change these settings.

I'd forgotten about the ability to change the D4's settings, so must do that.

Thanks for all the feedback.
As it turns out when they work out how to use the trip computer and compare it to what everyone here has reported it's pretty consistent.

Can we please stop with the Electronic Nonsense. try this and you will get a factual figure on your consumption.
Fill your tank to the brim with diesel. drive it for a while (day or a week, or take it on a road trip). zero the trip meter (if your speedo is accurate!!)before you go. When you return fill it up again to the brim and take note of the amount of litres put into the tank and how many KM's you have travelled. then it is simple maths. Don't worry about the little label at near the tank that says DO NOT OVERFILL. It's diesel, the only thing to worry about is the foaming of the fuel.
Litres / distance X 100 = consumption.
eg; 90l / 950 = 0.0947 X 100 = 9.47l/100km.
Physical as against imaginary.
just like those cute little BOSE speakers. good sound if you like your music compressed (MP3's?). They cannot replace the laws of physics. just like computers cant guesstimate the consumption of your vehicle.
PS: soory to be frank but too many beers and I hate Electronic gizmo's. Fuel flow doesn't work in aeroplanes either as what is on the guage doesn't really equate to the actual fuel burn.

Odometer, normally accurate even though the speedo is normally optomistic.
