Which Chip/Remap for Defender 130 Td5 (1999)

Hello all. Going over old ground I know but thought I'd ask the question.. I have a 1999 Defender 130 with 210000 kms on the clock. I'm looking into either the chip route or a big Nissan donk. I've been looking at Td5 alive, Tunit, 'morepower.com', but to name a few. Tunit seems to be the favourite so far but I want to know more. Having done the head gasket (now steel dowels!) and the injector loom (oil in the seat base), I think the engine is good and healthy. Is remapping the go or chip/plug and play the better option? My only fear is that dragging all that power out of a 2.5 is asking a lot.. (hence the Td42 Nissan option). Thoughts, experiences and difference between the 2 explaned please.... Thanks. As far as I know, you can't chip the early Td5 ECU.

Will a Td42 fit in ? Have you considered the Isuzu 4BD1 turbo option.

Yeah, The Td42 would fit a treat. Plan to use the Patrol box against the Land Rover transfer box. As for chipping early Td5's, the guy from Tunit said no probs (for a $1200 fee of course). I'm just looking to make a heavy truck reliable in Aussie heat and I don't think the Td5 is capible of that. Simon.

the early td5 ecu's can be chipped but it involves physicality removing the old chip and soldering in a new one from what i have been told. where the later ones can simply be re-programmed.
plenty of power can be had from the td5 though. i suppose it will push the limits of it a bit.

what do you need the extra power for?

With the bigger tyres, roo bar, roof rack, camp body and 2 spares my 130 is getting heavy, I'm finding that suddenly 110kmh is hard work and not just an easy cruse. I don't want to go everywhere at wharp speed, but it would be nice to keep with the trafic without having to go up and down the box like a semi driver! (tho 16 speed wud be gud fun!)

I had the 04 TD5 130 upgraded by Tombie2 and very happy with the stage 1 version. It was a later model ECU ("NNN" ???) which can be done just by plugging in and programming. I understand the earlier model is more difficult.

An option is to acquire a newer ECU and flash that.

I'm guessing that if I swap the ECU for the later 'flashable' version I would then have to have the vehicle 'plugged in' to get the injectors matched with the replacement ECU. How do u tell if the ECU is one of the older or newer types? Thanks!

There is a sticker on one side.

You will want part # NNNxxxxxx (flashable late type) 99 model will be a MSBxxxx
