Hi Guys,

Just got off the phone with Dynamic Tyres, the distributor of General Tyres, as looking for 1 x 255/60R18 AT2 as a spare for out trip. Rang around a few of the usual tyre shops in Brisbane to no avail.

Was advised that General Tires haven't been able to supply for the last couple of months and next delivery not 'til September and they reckon that most of that delivery will be allocated for back orders. :(:(

So open to suitable suggestions for an alternate tyre that can be run with 3 GGs. Don't know if I'm over cautious about the differing actual ODs of tyres of the same profile.

Cheers....

have you tried buying from the US. Prices are cheaper and delivery is quick.

check out Tirerack. there is a big thread in this section on them.

I did the rounds of a few tyre places in Canberra to get prices on GGs but not one of the places had even heard of them .

What are they worth in Aust.

I have also heard second hand that while the Tire Rack prices for tyres are still good, they have ramped up shipping prices by 50-100% so making the landed, fitted product only a little cheaper than buying and fitting in Aust.
Can anyone confirm this very recent development?

Hi Garry,

From memory yes their shipping prices have nearly doubled in the last twelve months or so. I would have to dig out the quotes but from memory for five BFG A/T's used to be about $350, now $580 as of two weeks ago.

While they are still cheaper the gap has closed quite a bit compared to what it was even though the Australian dollar has increased in value against the Greenback.

cheers,
Terry

Garry

When I got mine earlier this year prices in Aus are around the $420 mark but a few suppliers were willing to supply and fit for around $380

Garry

Prices for shipping have been steadily rising over time and it was noticeable from the beggining of the tire rack thread.

Do yourself a favour and order yourself a pair. You then wont have this problem again and you can rotate them properly as well

There's alot of this going on . You have to balance price
vs. freight for many US purchases . They realise what our local
rort prices are and want some of that action too. Had a delivery
yesterday that was USD$40 freight , but $7.46 on the pack .......
If it wasn't for the fact that their selling price was 19% of our
RRP , I wouldn't bother , but it does annoy me .
Nineteen percent ....... WTF !

Trobbo,

Hopefully when the current tyres get a few more Ks under their belt and time to buy a new round I'll get myself a set of 17 inch rims with matching rubber.:)

Hi Pohm66,

I have some that would do you for spares. I personally think they are not a very good tyre which is why I have them sitting here.

Are you anywhere near Brisbane?

TimJ.

I will have a new one available once we have finished our trip...when we bought our truck over from NZ I bought a new case with me and it is currently fitted on a rim kindly loaned by another member of the forum...He is in Brissy so once we head south we will be giving his rim back and we can make it available anywhere south of Brissy!..

The only trouble is I dont know when that will be but it would be at least 3 weeks from now...we are off up the Cape on Sat then may go thru to Alice before coming back to the coast.

You can email me direct if you are intereted.

Have you considered buying two of the new GG At's.

They are reportedly a better tyre & are available via Jax tyres I beleive.

They are the same size & about $350 ea fitted.

Then later you could buy the rest.

What is a GG AT?

Hi Chuck,

Have you been able to source 255/60R18 GG AT tyres in Australia recently ie in the last few weeks?

I need two and haven't been able to source any in Perth. I have been advised that earliest delivery in Australia is early Sept and at prices way better than available through Tire Rack.

I originally bought tyres through Tire Rack but as indicated earlier in the thread shipping costs per 4x tyres have escalated significantly over the past 12mths.

May 2011 - US$

Here is the quote:

FED EXPRESS (1-3 DAYS) - $ 1131.19 SHIPPING METHOD FIP
FED ECONOMY (3-5 DAYS) - $ 409.33 SHIPPING METHOD FIE
4 56HR8GRAT2XL 255/60R18 GE*GRAB AT 2 XL US$216.00
Total US$864.00 PLUS FEDEX SHIPPING

Added costs are international bank tx/cc fees, fitting balancing = result approx AUD$325+ per tyre without any warranty.

Close call unless desperate.

There is another thread about GG AT's.

From memory some guys have had them fitted recently.

These are the GG AT's sourced out of Europe not USA.

Thanks Guys, I now have a couple of good contacts. PMs away:)

In the unlikely event these fall through I'll try Jax tyres or import.

A good pre-loved tyre is definitely my preferance as this would be number 6 tyre.

I was in the same boat before we went away on our trip at the beginning of the month. Tire rack supplied two tyres delivered to Yass for about $830.00. Ordered Monday and arrived the following Wednesday week. Cant argue with the service but don't much like their freight prices. Got to wonder why the distributer cant get their act together though.
As a matter of interest we crossed the Simpson via the Rig Road and up to Batton Hill via the Hay river. Only had one puncture which we were able to plug. This is my third set of GGs and I think they are as good as any of the other tyres available in the standard size.

Tote

What is a GG AT?
General Grabber. The original version was labelled AT but the new replacement is AT2.

I stand corrected - I've originally purchased GG AT2 tyres and had recently priced the AT2 at TireRack. I don't know anything about the GG AT!!

General Grabber. The original version was labelled AT but the new replacement is AT2.

The AT2s have been produced for many years and replaced the AT tyre. But the new ones are called AT and have a diferent tread pattern.

ATs are not coming to Oz in 18 inch but the new Ats are available in 19inch but do not know if they are available in Oz.

I emailed AJS (disco3 sponsor) asking for a cost to ship to Oz, and they are not interested in supplying, not helpfull.

"Contact Dave Rowland at Rovercraft in Auss, search on Google, your best bet mate I think."

I will see if I can find another European supplier.

Try camskill in the UK, I've had a fair few tyres from them recently and they may well be happy to ship to Aus. They're currently showing the GG's in stock at £155 each.
