Help!

I think...

We have a 2002 110 Defender, second owner (actually, 3rd or 4th, I think), that's had a fair few things added or modified.

I recall the previous owner mentioning something about heating/air con system being modified, in order to improve the air conditioning efficiency/effectiveness, but sacrificing the heater functionality.

As we don't use air con, but could use the heater, I went in search of what had been done, with a view to restoring to standard.

Armed with the factory workshop manual, and a diagram of the heating/cooling system, I took a peek under the bonnet, to see if I could see what had been modified.

As far as I can see, the heater element isn't where the diagram says. It looks like it's now located in the rear passenger side of the engine bay, but still looks like the coolant lines go to it.

As far as I know, the vehicle has had a Bruce Davis intercooler and ECU chip done to it, otherwise I'm unaware of what else has been done under there.

If anybody can have a glance at the attached pic, any advice as to where things are now, or what sort of plan has been used, would be appreciated.

Either that, or I have the wrong workshop manual, or I'm misinterpreting it.

I'm hoping to get along to a SCLRO event shortly, so might ask people there who might be knowledgeable in such things. Failing that, I might actually go to a mechanic...

Thanks in advance!

Your seeing things right, that is the heater in the corner from what I can see on the pic.:)

One mod. worth looking for...
Follow the heater hoses and look for an after market tap fitted into one of the hoses(Ball valve type).
We close the taps in trucks to stop coolant entering the heater core in summer to maximise the A/C.

Will do, thanks. Hopefully it will be as simple as that. It looks as if the pipes all lead to the heating unit, but will get in and have a closer look.

Have also checked the travel of the lever/cable that actuates the heater element, but tonight will actually disconnect the cable and make sure that the cable is giving the full travel required.

Discovered a small source of confusion for me last night... the workshop manual cooling system and engine bay diagrams are assumed for left-hand drive, so obviously some things have to be moved around to accommodate the steering wheel on the other side.... doh!

Cheers!
