Hey guys,

So ive come to the decision that its time to get a new vehicle. The old girl is still in fantastic shape, but the little things like rattles, tired response and the potential for some component changes needed soon makes it a good time.

I took last saturday to be my test drive day of 101 different cars, utes, 4x4s, SUVs etc. I went from top end to your general toyota and came out the other end thinking that staying in the family with the baby boy, Freelander 2, is my current choice.

the 2.2lt diesel has a surprising amount of response when i took her for a drive, hills didnt bother it from stand still and is flat out comfy. My next step is to look at a overnight test drive when i want, to ensure its got everything i want.

To put in prospective what i use my car for;
- at least twice a month i do a 1500k trip between brisbane and central QLD mines, so the roads aren't the best
- I enjoy a beach run when i can fit it in, dirt off road isn't my choice of run
- I refuse to buy a car that 2 adults cannot be comfortable in the rear
- Budget is $60k
- I want new, because i'm looking at a lease

The freelander seems to tick the boxes and im keen to stay in the family, however;

I want to put to the masses to check if there are things i need to consider if i make this purchase?

Obviously ground clearence is sacrificed, but is the statement i keep hearing "The freelander could go anywhere a defender can go, if it had the same clearence" true?

I'd really appreciate the input as to what i should consider moving from the D1 to this, because i'm very keen, but also a cautious buyer.

Thanks, Alex

O.K. You want to buy new and stick to Landy!
Wait till the new Evogue comes out in October and see if you like it.
My name is down for one and prices start at $50k, so $60k will get you into and auto with cow hide.
Alternatively, a VW Amorak Ute, top of range you get for that money and boy are they good.
My budget as a work car did not quite make the $60k mark so I settled for a Navara STX, still fine but nothing like the german beast.
Looks and drove very well.
My 2cents worth. Cheers

Thanks mate. I'll try to test drive one ASAP and see what they're like.

Anywhere I can find out the info on the envouge?

ok guys, so im still struggling with my decision.

did my investigation for the evoque, it looks the business, but how will it go offroad? what im struggling with is how do i gauge the evoque without being able to test drive?

now the decision is, do i sign up to a freelander, or do i wait for the evoque?

still interested in some feedback for things to consider when going to a freelander?

I've had a FL2 TD4 for nearly 4 years now. Can' t fault it really. Does what it says and really is a very smart buy. 4 years on and I still enjoy driving it. To sum it up.

Positive:
Engine - great power and torque
Gearbox - smooth and responsive
Quality - nothing has fallen off yet
Offroad - will handle a lot more than its looks like it can
Towing - 2 ton is plenty for the average user

Negative:
Handling somewhat soft but is the balance between on/off road
TD4 can be noisy from outside and a bit truck like but quiet with windows up
Servicing about $350 for a minor so seek out the corporate programme if eligible this is what tipped me over the line - saved about $2800 in servicing costs.
