Hi all,
I'm in the process of trying to source a second hand bulkhead with a little less rust for my LWB 2a, Serenity. She has a suffix B chassis.
I'm hoping this isn't a question that's been answered a million times before... I've done a bit of research, but haven't been able to find any info whether there's any differences between the bulkheads on the SWB and LWB models. Are there any big differences between the two, or are they just a straight swap? Also, is there much variation between bulkheads of different ages? Will an early 2 bulkhead fit a later model 2a?
Thanks in advance,
Martin

I think you'll find swb and lwb share the same bulkhead.
I am not sure on 2 vs 2a (but suspect would be same)
someone will be along shortly I'm sure to tell you one way or the other!

SWB and LWB bulkheads/firewalls for the same era are the same, as long as the LWB is a 4 cylinder one. All 6 cylinder 109s had a different bulkhead.
As the years progressed, they went from individual windscreen wipers mounted straight under the windscreen, to cable operated with a single motor in the left hand dash.
Series 2 bulkheads had wind out ventilators rather than the lever operated of the 2a.
Generally speaking, any 4 cylinder bulkhead can interchange with any other 4 cylinder bulkhead as far as I know
EDIT: Series 3s have different windscreen hinges and door hinges and thus aren't quite as readily swapped. So stick to your series' series!

Thanks very much for the info. Mine is a 4 cylinder, so I'll keep an eye out for other 4s!

Just to confirm that - All Series 2/2a bulkheads are very similar, and interchangeable, except for the difference between the four and six cylinder engines. The differences over time are sufficiently small that the parts book only list two numbers, for the four and the six, but there are differences over time, though none of significance. As indicated, Series 3 bulkheads could be adapted, but with considerably more work. The major differences are the windscreen hinges and the tray. Although door hinges are different the bolt size and position is the same, so this is not a concern.
90/110/Defender bulkheads could also be adapted, but with even more work involved. Series 1 bulikheads - forget it!

JD - your comprehensive list has missed the wiper change - which IME is significant. Mid 2A there was a change from individual wipers mounted in the windscreen to a single worm-drive wiper. A later bulkhead will work without modification with individual wipers (just need to plug two holes). However to change an earlier bulkhead to the worm drive wipers requires a number of modifications to mount the wiper assemblies and the motor.

Yes, I am well aware of that - but in fact my parts book does not show a different part number (rather to my surprise - I thought there would in fact be more changes in part number, as there are other changes along the way, mostly in the presence or absence of holes etc.)

I suspect the reason the parts book shows no change is the later bulkhead will fit an earlier vehicle without modification.
Landrover probably did/don't care about owners who want to use earlier model parts in later model vehicles.
The earlier bulkhead also has a hole/panel where the hand throttle and started button are fitted.

G'day Folks :)

The series 2/2a pre chassis suffix "D" had no windscreen wiper holes between the firewall/dash upper edges and the vents, and had the solenoid holes, and the "D" onwards had the wiper holes in them and the mounting for the cable driven wiper motor on the left side recess, with the corresponding rectangular cable hole.

cheers

Hi All

I thought that the four clinder petrol and diesel bulkheads were different too, the absence of the fuel filter mounts being one of them, not a huge difference but one that helps :):D

                 Regards Mark
