DIY Windscreen Repairs??

Hi all.

I have a small chip in the windscreen of my D3. I'm tossing up whether to get someone to fix it or to try a DIY kit from Supercheap. Has anyone used one of those kits and had success? I'd give it a go, no worries, except the chip is right in my line of sight whilst driving and I don't want to stuff it up...

I've done a couple with those kits on our D2.

The result was ok, but not as good as the one or 2 that have been done professionally.

Out of direct sight line I would say go for it. Right in view, I would get it done professionally.

I have used the "Ufixit" windscreen repair kit on my wifes Subaru,and it turned out as good as any professional repair I have seen.

I'm with LowRanger.

I have used one of the Ufixit kits to repair a chip and it turned out just as good as any of the professional jobs I've had done over the years.

Given that it is in your line of sight I'd possibly opt to get it professionally done. If the professionals stuff it up they're liable for your windscreen. If you stuff it up you have to live with it.

Just my added 2c worth.

Your insurance dosnt cover a windscreen a year ? A chip any where your wipers cover is unroadworthy and can be defected, so could be just a phone call to ask ;) or increase your cover then get it ( i didnt say that thou)

For a small chip I would not be replacing the whole screen, I've heard of many a screen having issues with leaking afterwards.

I too have used the uFixit windscreen repair kit, works a treat.
You can buy them from Repco.

The most important thing is to alway carry those stick on windsceen chip bandaids. They keep all the crap out of the damaged area.
Then when u can either do it yourself or get it professionally repaired.

I would not replace the whole screen either except if it was in my line of sight and I have not tried the DYI repair kits but I have have bullseyes fixed professionally befor and they eventually become visable again. Havent heard of screens leaking after fitting though. ( take it back and tell them to do it right )

A short blast of CRC brake cleaner on the chipped area then wiped off with a clean lint-free cloth and apply the " Ufixit" routine.. done several ...
You need a sharp stanley blade or one of those razor blades with the safety cover along one edge to scrape off the excess once the stuff has properly cured. Really have to look hard for the repair if it's been done well.

the factory screen unless there was no choice ie.
required to sell it on ( immediately ) ........

Thankyou all for your replies. Looks like I might give the Ufixit a go. I will report back again once it's done. :)
