4 Hours submerged...

Hey Guys,

15 minutes of driving today up in the Turon River found me a 1.5 meter deep hole and one very wet Fender. The front left wheel was completely submerged for around 4 hours (no self recovery gear so we were forced to walk back to the village). I noticed on the drive home there's a bit of a squeak coming from the wheel that was submerged. It was in freshwater so i'm hoping for the best but what should I do to minimize injury?

Check for water ingress to the wheel bearings and diff.

Without breather extensions the front diff will certainly have drawn in water making the oil milky & that will cause real problems before long.
As Bigjon says, have a look at both.

Now might be the perfect time to do the wheel bearing mod to oil operated bearings if not already done.Seeing that you will need to remove the hubs if you haven't:cool:

Also a good time to read the 4wd Handbook.....Always have another vehicle,
walk river crossings etc It's a pain when the simple things come back and bite you:eek:

Bet I know where it was. If you were southbound (towards Woolshed Flats), you took the right hand exit, didn't you. Pulled out a Rodeo there the last trip I took. Valuable lesson young Alex. Always walk the crossing, never assume.

Hopefully its just a cleanout. Its the grit and grime from mud and dirty water that chews out seals and scores metal and the Turon is pretty clean.

For anyone else driving there, beautiful 4wd driving but the right exit is directly opposite the entry, which suckers people in (who don't walk it). You just about get to the other side and fall into a big hole. The left hand is a dog leg to get to, but the best way across.

Spot on mate! Yeah too bad we were solo travelers so it was there for a while! Here's a picture to show the damage.

I like travelling solo and going mid week when no one is around so I have invested in recovery equipment. Get yourself a long handled shovel, hand winch and extension straps. Hard work, but you would have been out of there in an hour.

Had a similar moment on the turon on monday but we were on the hillend side and had a second truck all fixed in a couple of min:D Still need to check the oil in the diff and swivel housing:D

Hey guys,

I replaced the bearing on the wheel that was submerged and it was fine for this weekends trip! I checked the diff oil which seemed fine - it appears as if my axle has a breather heading up into the bonnet! Good fun!

Just a suggestion but maybe lash out on a snorkle as well if your planning any more swimming trips.;)
