Hi all,

I am looking for ideas to mount a Brake Controller somewhere in the Puma.

Where have you mounted your Brake Controller in your Puma? Obviously, this will be dependent on the type of Brake Controller you have.

I think this thread is best answered with photos - and we all love photos don't we?:D

He is one that Drover has sent me to kick it off...

OK, I don’t have a brake controller ‘yet’, I do intend to install one. I always envisioned installing the control on the shelf to the Left of the steering column. Now looking at the photo, I’d have at a guess the control unit is to lager (wide) to fit in that space.
Questions: Is there a control made that’s small enough to fit there? If so are they any good?
Cheers
Craig

I have a prodigy that clips into it's holder when I'm towing.. It's on the shelf to the lower right of the steering wheel. Works a treat and I unclip and remove it when I'm not towing.

I would send a pic but the baby is off at the panel beaters. Was showing off going up hill in the mud too fast and hit a tree. Doh!

There is a picture of the type you are interested in the attached thread on Noz's deefer. The brand was Redarc.

Put mine slightly forward of one in picture but on inside of panel. Held in place with good old Velcro. Been there quite a while so seems ok. And it's out of sight. The adjuster knob is posistioned further up panel. That's a pain to fit but doable.

OK I know I’m revising a old tread but…………. I have finally bought and fitted a brake controller. I know there are compromises with this particular unit, but seeing as I don’t actually own a trailer-caravan-boat trailer that requires or has electronic brakes I’m more than happy with my decision and the way it’s turned out.

I had the same unit in my D2 also in the same place and will probably repeat the process in my Def90 (when he arrives).....can I ask why you thought you comprimised with the unti? I found it always worked well in the Discovery.

Bit of a numty question on a forum like this, but what does a break controller actually do...?

Reading the threads I assume it assist/aids with controlling the break force distribution on trailers fitted with electronic breaks? How and why is that required?

I've never towed anything other than offroad trailers, so complete novice on the topic.

Not a numpty question at all.. when a trailer weighs over 750kgs by law the trailer has to have it's own braking system (to prevent the weight of the trailer/caravan etc from pushing into the car when you brake).. a brake controller operates the brakes on the trailer.. so when you brake the brake controller brakes the trailer at the same time.. :) Oh and I mounted mine on the front of the caddy.. :)

Thanks Sue!

Pretty used to over-run/mechanical break systems as used on heavier off-road trailers, but I can imagine the benefits of an independant electronic breaking system...

Recently had the 'pleasure' of installing a redarc into a Disco 3. Chose the remote switch version for neatness...and had the 4WD shop install it.

They could only use the park brake cover on the centre console, subsequently found out that the ignition switch blank on left side of steering column is another good spot.

Anyhoo, unit wired ares about....turning headlights on actually operated the brakes. Applying brakes operated the aux power circuit....and god know what the anything else did.

Moral of story....get it done right the first time!!!

if you want it done right, got to do it yourself :D

I have fitted a Tekonsha P3 fitted to the same spot as NOZ. i remove it when not needed and all that is left is a small bracket

I would fit the remote redarc though........

My Father has a caravan with electrical brakes fitted and he's getting on a bit. I can see the 'Son I need some help with the caravan' phone call one day so I better be prepared. One day I intend on buying a caravan myself.

GEK064 thanks for the feedback. Not knowing of anyone with this system fitted I envisioned the ‘compromise’ being the ability of the unit to manually control the amount of braking force applied to the trailer. Ie. If the trailer starts to ‘fishtail’ you can manually increase the braking applied to the trailer too pull it back inline. I’ve had it happen to me on one or two occasions in the Vic High Country. With the Redarc system I guess it can be done by pushing in the button and rotating the knob at the same time. But went you’ve got a trailer swinging away behind the vehicle you’ve usually got your hand too full to perform a task like that. (I imagine?)

I know there are heaps of different types but the one we choose appeared to be the most robust. I've a camper trailer, a boat and will probably be getting a horse float in the future...all different weights and handling. The position you and I have choose suit the command position...literally at your figure tips...I can touch mine without my hands leaving the sterring wheel. The unit will be the first addition to the Def90!

Hi Sue, what sort of brake controler do you have?
I have a prodige and I can't stop my LED brake lights on the 90 from flashing,
when I hook up the camper.

I've got the Tekonsha P3.. but if your camper has LED's you need to get a Trailer adapter module... because the car is European it has an in-built diagnostic system that will not recognise that a trailer fitted with LED lights is connected.. which is why they are flashing..

The LED Adaptor Module fixes this problem.. :)

Hi Sue - it is interesting what you have had to do.

I have an SVX and a Ultimate camper with LED lights and have no issues at all nd am not using any adapter module???

I am sue someone on here can explain why....

I am not quite sure why you haven't had to use one.. we are in the caravan industry and all European cars have needed to have this fitted when the trailer they are towing has LED lights..

I'm not up on what Ultimate Campers use for their tail lights but are you sure they are LED's? Sometimes the lights may look like LED's but are not.. Perhaps they have the unit already in the camper somewhere (although this would be very unusual).. :)

This link explains it much better than me..

To resurrect an old thread. We had a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 fitted to my wife's MY15 Defender today. The cover over the steering column is a different shape to the previous models and the unit fits into the little shelf to the right of the steering wheel without any problems.

I'll post some photo's when we get it back from the Dealer's (air con not working ;))

I'm currently making inquiries to see if I can fit the same cover to my MY14 110 rather than cutting the existing one.

I bought a Tekonsha P3 and then discovered it wouldn't fit on the shelf next to steering wheel, so it ended up on the passenger side, which is not ideal. The Tekonsha has to be mounted horizontally for the brake sensor to work properly.
Next time I would probably go for the remote Redarc unit which should easily fit to the right of the steering wheel.
