Hi I was wondering whether anyone could help me, and whether anyone had shipped a defender gearbox + Transfer box to Australia. I have been weighing up the costs and I have been quoted $1600 for a second hand gearbox without transfer box, so i thought I'd get one shipped from the UK as they are cheap as chips!!! around 200 pounds or $300 with the transfer box.

What is the weight without oil, of a gearbox and transfer box Lt77 for defender

Roughly what did it cost when any of you shipped one to Oz!!!!

any other shipping advice?

Thanks in advance

May want to drop a PM to Ashtrans on here. He regularly ships gearboxes and stuff from the UK to Australia.

Last time I investigated it was far cheaper to buy a factory reconditioned box from Ashcroft's (Ashtrans) with warranty, pay for shipping and for not returning the exchange unit, than it was having a box re-built here.

If it was me, I would be getting an R380 instead of the LT77.

I got a recon LT230T transfer box from Ashcroft.

I can't remember the cost of freight off the top of my head but all up for box and freight was about $1700 I think. That included the 150GBP core cost for not sending my old one back and extra for a stronger cross-pin.

Buy one of these:
Ashcroft Transmissions - Short Bellhousing R380 (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=157)

That way you also get an upgrade to the (much stronger) R380.

Yup, don't waste your time with that useless LT77 rubbish. I have an Ashcroft delivered short shaft R380 in a crate waiting to be fitted to a 200Tdi 90 next week, very cheap and took twice as long to be released from aus customs than it took to arrive in this country:mad:

I got an R380 and transfer box from Ashcrofts (received last week) total weight was 124kg DHL charged ashcrofts 330gbp and then charged $650 this end for handling, fees Aquis, customs etc - still cheaper!

I also consdered buying a box on ebay in the uk and shipping to Ashcroft to avoid the base unit charge - didn'twork out in the end but if you know anyone in the UK who owes you a favour it might!!!!

They do exist here.... I bought one on Ebay a few months ago for SWIMBO's Shorty Tdi project as it suits the job and budget. There was another on there a few weeks ago.. Have you put a wanted advert on here? How big a rush are you in? Juddy was bringing a container over... It might not have left yet...

First tip dont use DHL as they try the customs fee thing often;) look at whirlpool forums.
Second maybe talk to juddy in vendors section as her company is bringing in acontainer soon and offered space in the vendors section.
finally i would pay the extra for an ashcroft box but its up to you and your budget.
