View Full Version : Engine warning light and warranty concerns

2008 Defender 110 (Puma).

This morning I got in and drove up the street. I pulled in to let someone past and noticed a bit of a clunking kind of sound. A gentle clunking though, nothing grinding or banging...in time with the revs too and only while I was idling and waiting for this car to go past.

When I pulled away, the clunking sound stopped and the engine light came on and power was drastically reduced - foot flat on the floor in first wasn't getting the revs up at all. Very worrying.

I pulled over, turned everything off and on again and the drive was back to normal but the light remains on.

Thoughts?

This is my first Land Rover and I've not had it for long...

I've got the car booked in for a recall notice (P022 handbrake issue) next Friday and while it's in I want them to check why the drivers door is leaking at the top....and now this will get added to the list.

Hoping it's nothing too serious.........warranty runs out in October. Anything else I should get them to check while it's in?

It is always a good idea to get someone to independantly checkout your vehicle towards the end of the warranty period, and advise what is needed. Some one like Peter Davis (Davis Performance Landys: 02 9679 1978) would be ideal, if you are on the south side of Sydney. I have always found it money well spent.

It sounds as if the defender entered limp home mode due to a tested DTC appearing. You did the correct thing by switching off and on again as this resets the limp mode unless it is a serious issue then the limp mode would have activated again. The MIL could disappear after three driving cycles if the dtc passes the diagnostic test though will still be recorded on the ECU. If I was to take a stab in the dark over the cause...... I would say that based on the time of the day, the age of the defender and the noises heard that the High Pressure rail control valve has stuck and caused high rail pressure, which trips a diagnostic, relieves the rail pressure causing you to see the MIL light on with restricted performance. A common problem with your age defender though more so in colder climes? and it comes under Service Action Number QO68.

Though I might be well wrong, just my two pence worth

Lorryman - thanks for your suggestion. I should get to know all of the various causes of engine light warnings a little better. Is there a way of finding out for certain what the cause of the warning was or is this all very secret stuff that only the qualified chaps know?

KarlB - I booked the car in with some guys up in Brookvale for a full pre-warranty expiration check this week. Great idea - thank you.

@The Cone of Silence, have a read of this:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/electronic-diagnostics/133522-how-diagnose-dtc.html

As to the cause all you need is a OBDII Fault code reader which will read the dtc and give you the option of clearing it. There are many on the market all giving different levels of access and abilities. I have a scangauge 2 fitted in the defender all the time as it gives me extra gauges to monitor engine systems and it also gives me the ability to read and clear tested dtc's.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The new version of scangauge now also gives you the ability to read pending dtc's. You can also add more gauges to the scangauge using x gauges:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/133533-additional-scangauge2-xgauge-codes-pumas.html

A quick Google of the dtc code will bring up the explanation for it. Try googling P1169.

The next system I use is the nanocom evolution which allows you to do more than just check and clear dtc's, it allows access into the 10AS alarm module and the Wabco ABS ecu's. I also use a BBS MSV2, and its capabilities are better than the scangauge and evo.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/electronic-diagnostics/133942-bbs-msv2-extreme-vehicle-server.html

So as you can see if you have the tools to read the dtc's you can save yourself the bill, when out of warranty on dealer visits, the cost of them plugging in their diagnostics. My local dealers charge 1 hours labour to read and clear the MIL light DTC's. That's a £100 for 5 mins work. And you can do some research into the fault before going to dealers incase they try to fob you off with the immortal line, "That's normal on a defender".

HTH Brian.

Thanks Brian - very helpful indeed.

The engine light has now stopped showing (after thrice starting the car) so the problem has, for now, gone away, but I'll be sure to let the independent specialist know about it tomorrow morning...and will ask advice on getting a diagnostic tool that can help me as I'm hoping to get out on a couple of long trips next year and I'm as allergic to unnecessary overpayments to dealers as the next man.

Much obliged, Sir - many thanks indeed.

I got Monty back from Ayres Automotive in Brookvale today. Nice guys.

They found two fuel pressure issues:

P0088-07: Fuel rail/ system pressure too high, mechanical failures
P1169-00: Fuel rail pressure senor in range but high

They also found the following:

Oil leaking from the turbo oil drain pipe
Minor movement and crush in all steering joints
Extra silicon in the driver door upper seal....which clearly doesn't work as the bugger drips on me every day after it's been raining!

All in all, I'm really happy to spend this $100 knowing that I have a list of things I need to get LR to pay attention to prior to the expiration of the warranty.

Thanks for the suggestion and also for your help and advice guys.

Rob,

as long as the dtc's where not cleared by Ayres Automotive and are still logged on the ECU, the fuel rail should be replaced under warranty. It happened to my Puma and that is how they resolved it. If they cleared the logged fault codes LR will do nothing as there will be nothing logged on the ECU meaning the Pumas fine. Here is a copy of Service Action Number QO68:
