Anyone know a good place to source air-bag suspension for a Defender HCPU?

You will not have the chance to see it, but each LR Expo there has been someone with aftermarket airbag suspension setup for LR.
You may have to wait till someone reports on exhibitors. If I attend, I'll pass on the supplier.

I'll call him on Monday. Newhue and I actually met him at the 4WD show - we were attracted by his Defender at the stand.

Mind you, looking around it appears the Firestone kits here are about 3 times the price of what you pay from the US :(

PS - I'm bored with the old buy locally debate. 3 times the price is hard to understand, and hard to accept. If I can find a reputable US dealer, they'll probably get my sale.

Have a look at this thread >>> 120" extra cab (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/66265-120-extra-cab-39.html) <<<
I think Matt used Air Bag Man.
If I remember correctly, some time ago, ABM was developing air bags for the front of 110's. Previously they had to be modified one's to fit, I think, so hopefully now there's a whole bolt on kit to suit Defender / County.

Cheers, Murray

I just read a thread on another forum discussing airbag use. It was claimed that the Firestone coil-rite airbags are for temporary load levelling, and not designed for constant use.

Given I will have the load on most of the time for 12 months, I'm not sure if they're the right bags to use, or if I should choose another type.

I'll chat to AirBagMan and see. If he's providing advice and his prices aren't too over the top, I'll give him the job.

i find that statement hard to believe, i have had both and there was very little difference between them and i preferred the firestone air line setup.

Hi
I have the air bag man kit in the back of my county. Went to the cape and back no problems.

Talk to Brett, I spoke with him Heaps about the front bags when I did mine, he now has lower pistons that accomodate for all the angular changes required, as opposed to when we were both setting up, shimming and redrilling etc

Just road tested my Firestone bags on some real rough south west roads and thay are tops. Your choice but when you need to load your vehicle air bags rule. I now know why D3 owners give us ****.

After too many failures with EAS on my '93 Rangie I decided to go back to coils.
The short of this is I have four air bags in the shed and all the comps etc still in the rangie, including a manifold set up to inflate the air bags.

I am in the Hervey Bay area if interested.

Cheers,
Mike

PS The air bags from new did about 10,000kms before I switched back.

Ended up going with a Firestone kit from AirbagMan. Incidentally, the kit is named CR5028 by them, but has 6010 stamped on the bag. Probably twice the price as the US, but I couldn't seem to find them.

I must say, the kit also came with a spacer for the bottom and a plate for the top of the bags.

All in all, I'm fairly happy with the kit. Also decided to put some new King Springs in while I was at it.

Hi there, do you still have the airbags etc??

I've just received my set of Firestones as in Ranga's post. Mine is a 90 though and with full touring setup the rear mudflaps are perilously close to the blacktop. With more than a year waranty left I'm not playing with the suspension yet, hence the airbag helper arrangement.

My question is this: the kit came with a very tidy looking top protector/ spacer that serves to keep the air hose nice and centre. I've not had the Puma's rear coils out yet, but on 300 Tdi's there is a retainer bar that keeps the coil fixed to the axle. Do you need some sort of protection for the underside of the airbag (axle side)? Nothing came with the kit for the 90, so is the bag strong enough to sit on top of the new bolts ( supplied with the kit) or does minimum recommended 5 psi cause enough "kick" from the sidewalks to keep it from damaging itself on the bottom?

Advice/ opinions will be much appreciated

My Airbagman kit came with bottom plastic spacers about 2" thick. In addition to protecting the bags, on my 130 the extra height of the spacers would be a necessity for the correct functioning of the bags.

Ranga,

The 90 obviously has significantly smaller and shorter coils, so there's no bottom spacer. That's why I'm a bit concerned with the bottom rubbing on possible rough bits at the bottom of the coil.

I think I might give airbagman a call and see what's up...

Of course. I think some people have used plastic chopping boards as protectors.

Sorry for dragging up an old post, but I used the search before I posted anything.....

How did you end up going with the bottom plate you were talking about. I'm considering using bags to keep the rear of my 90 lifted when I tow my camper.

How have you found them in use and also day to day, assuming you fitted them.

Can't help with the 90 specific part if your question but I have helper airbags in the back of my 110 and I'm very happy with them. I usually run with a minim of 500kg on board, but head up to GVM for longer trips so I'm running HD springs and then air up to suit the additional load.

Only issue I've had has been a lower spacer (which is standard figment on a 110) disintegrating - suspect a manufacturing defect as no issues since.

Suspect they've cost me some articulation but it seems a reasonable trade off in a touring rig.

Hope this is of some use.

G'day n plus one, thanks for the reply. From the reports I have read, the majority of people are happy with them. Do you know if there is any difference between Firestone coil rite and the polyair. I see the coilrite can have a Kevlar sleeve to help protect the bag, do you know if they are worthwhile having?

I have read somewhere here that some prefer the airline connections on the coilrite over the polyairs due to leaking.

On another note, was that you (silver 110 with white hard RTT) I passed on the Monaro Hwy between Michelago and Bredbo last Saturday morning? I was in a white 90.

Yeah, that was me - just did a quick high country run on the weekend.

Did you see the rolled-over bronze ice tech 110 at the Cooma wreckers? I was hoping to buy some parts off it but I think it's going to the auctions.

If memory serves you only get the Kevlar sleeve on the higher rated bags, not the standard ones (which is what I have).

I've had no air line/fitting dramas with my Airbagman bags - not sure about other options.

I was so busy gawking at your truck as you came towards me I forgot to wave :wasntme: I did give the old multiple brake taps to say g'day though, the truck looks good.

No I missed the 110, thats a shame its going to auction, a few misc parts would be good as spares.

Yeah the kit with the sleeves from airbag world $470 compared to $325 for the standard bags.

Think I waved - I normally do!

You prob won't need the Kevlar bag kit - as it just gives more pressure/load adjustment. Standard kit is good to adjust for an extra 300kg (from memory).
