D4 2012 iPod compatability, what does that actually mean?

Hi

Has anyone ever nail down a dealer about the upgraded sound system? Does iPod compatable mean there is an aux input plug that won't charge the device but simply let it play into the system? Or does it mean yes it will charge the device but searching/scrolling through the files will be clunky and dangerous to do while driving. I mean I'm dreaming to think, charging, steering wheel controls, screen display etc are what they're talking about, aren't I...

Any device connected to the Aux input will just direct output from the device to the in car amplifier & speakers. No recharge, no power, no control from the steering wheel or screen other than amplifier volume.

If you want more than that you need a dedicated ipod or USB port. I think you will then get full control from steering wheel and on screen of track selection & volume plus will be powered and charged.

I have a 2012 D4 on order and I looked into this question. The current standard D4 has an auxilary plug at the rear of the centre stowing compartment (next to the second row air vents) that allows you to plug it in, but yes you do need to operate your iphone (or whatever) to get the music playing. Does not charge.
The 2012 has a iphone plug in the centre compartment (and a cute little tray for your device to sit in) that does charge the iphone and allows you to operate the music from the colour touchscreen in the console which is now standard (previosuly an option). I have tried it out in a HSE and it works well. Only hassle is you still have to plug/ unplug your iphone each time you get in/out.

I have the 2010 D4 and have my phone plugged into the ipod cable in the centre console. It is great to access all my music and still have all the functions like playlists, artists, random etc all via the gps touchscreen in the dash. I can also access via bluetooth my phonebook, caller lists and do voice activated dialling.

The only gripe i do have is that for some reason my iphone 4 will not charge. I have tried different cables but will let the dealer work out what's wrong at the next service. It's no big drama at the moment but on a long trip it will be annoying.

I have 3 cars all built in the UK within the same quarter of 2009 all have iPod/Phone USB connections. My Mini's will connect to and charge any iPod/Phone device. The D4 needs an adapter to achieve the same results.

You have to wonder how BMW/Mini could manage this ok and Land Rover couldn't?

I think you'll find that it's an Apple issue. They changed the voltage requirements at some point, so that in your case an older i(whatever) will work, whilst the newest won't.

Just purchased latest iphone 4 16G, version 4.3.3 (8j2) . to replace nokia which only had partial compatability. Connected new iphone to ipod jack and shows that it is charging, however phone gives message not compatible with system and kills radio. After disconecting from ipod cable radio ok after restarting car/ rebooting radio. Phone interface fully functional when not connected to ipod jack. I am hoping dealer will have soft ware upgrade for latest phone???

Very interesting noken, I'm on the verge of doing the same because my Nokia N8 is only partially compatible. I'm not worried about the music side of the iphone just the telephone, I use a usb stick for music and it works great. My worry was the people on here having trouble with iphones in the past, and not always connecting via bluetooth, not that the Nokia does either?

I have had no problems at all with the iphone4 and bluetooth connectivity. To be honest it is faultless in my D4.

Just take note all, that LR have taken the Apple & Blackberry phones OFF the list of compatible phones.
This was a while before I left to come on holidays.

The problem with these phones is if u upgrade your software this upsets all the settings in the phone module, because certain area's turn on/off depending on what upgrade is done from Apple/Blackberry.
Now Apple don't handover their upgrades regularly to manufacturers & only do when they seem fit.

Continuing on from earlier post, I phone 4 with version 4.3.3.3(8j2) not on landrover list of assessed software. Just discovered my Sony clock radio with ipod/iphone dock isn't recognised by phone and radio fails - strong interference. Phone does charge. Think I should have grabbed iphone 3 which was on special at telco. Looks like Apple may not consider your other iphone compatible items when upgrading their software? :(
