There is no reason imported tyres especially from the USA shouldn't be getting much cheaper here in tyre shops given that it now looks like parity with the US dollar is not a short term thing. Afterall tyre importers are buying for a lot cheaper now then they were 12 months ago.

If they don't meet the market then more and more people will start importing privately.

I have been waiting for this to start happening, anyway lets see if this is a one off or a long term price drop. If it is then the other brands will have to match them or lose market share.

My tyres on the D3 have maybe another 5,000 k's life in them so I'm about to start shopping around now.

Thanks for the info.

cheers,
Terry

Hi 400HPONGAS

Double checked price of G.G. AT2 255/60-18 from my local dealer today. STILL $398 So Question is where did your dealer get them to be able sell at that price

Afterall tyre importers are buying for a lot cheaper now then they were 12 months ago.

 Most people ( 99% ) don't import anything . Importers
know this and couldn't careless . My Importer mates are cleaning up on
US made HiFi and 12G shotties . MOST folk wouldn't have a
clue how to self import , and there are loads of US Companies
who won't send to an individual over here . I don't see much
changing at all . This Aussie Retail bitchin' is all bluster . Their
turnover is down " in general " , not because of our PayPal
account activity. Pacific Tyre don't give a monkey's about
us and our Tire-Rack odds 'n ends purchases , BUT they'll
do ANYTHING that's required to stop you setting up as
your own importer of anything they gouge us for . As you
probably know , Cooper Tire Australia were recently bought
out and are now as much a gouge as the rest , after being
over $100 cheaper on a D3 tyre for years ...........

Overseas holidays is the only gain most will ever get out
of the currency exchange rate .
Interestingly , anyone who has followed US prices ( of imports
to the US from Japan , France etc. ) will have seen big
increases in the US price over the last year eg Perfumes
from France have maintained their Aus$ price.

Actually Neil from what I know personally at least several of the large tyre import/wholesale distributor companys in Australia at management level are very aware about mobs like the tyre rack.

I deal directly with a number of tyre companys at management level through the motorcycle race promotion business I run. I have mentioned personal imports to several of them over time and they all know of the tyre rack and have said to me that they see mobs like the tyre rack as a real problem and that only relates to car/4x4 tyres.
Now it is very common for individuals to even private import motorcycle tyres which is really hurting motorcycle shops. The bike shop owners often say that people walk in spend 20 minutes of the salesmans time trying on helmets and riding gear only to walk out and order it online from OS. Right now more motorcycle shops are going broke then at any other time in the industries history. This is not all because of private imports but it is taking its toll.

Your correct that many US companys won't export OS directly but there are several companys in the US that act as freight forwarding agents for OS purchasers, so you can buy anything from any shop in the US and get it forwarded to you if you feel so inclined.

cheers,
Terry

Importing to Aus isn't just confined to new stuff either. As part of our move to Aus we're bringing my wife's Triumph Spitfire with us, so I've been madly dashing around collecting the final bits I need to finish it off. 2 of the suppliers I've been to in the last couple of weeks have commented on just how much 2ndhand stuff they're sending to Aus, neither could understand it until I mentioned the exchange rate, then it all clicked.

One is purely a breakers yard, doing Triumph's & MGF's. Apparently he's sending MGF's hydragas suspension to Oz like it's going out of fashion, can't break enough of them to meet demand. With the old Triumph's he had people wanting entire running gears, dashtops & bonnets. Shipping this stuff is costing a fortune, but you Aussies are still paying it.

The other has just rebuilt our engine and whilst I was picking it up, a chap from Melbourne rang up as he was on his way to see them while on a business trip. His order had gone from an overdrive gearbox, prop & differential to almost a container load of engines, gearboxes, diffs & 3 bonnets, when a few people he knew in the Triumph classic car scene had heard he was on this business trip. All the mechanical items had an exchange surcharge on them, no worries we'll just pay it was what came back. In the end his order had gone from just over £1000 to well north of £15k :o

The breaker made the amusing observation: 10-15 years ago we in the UK were shipping Triumphs & MG's back from the USA like they were going out of fashion, because of the exchange rate. Now, we're shipping all the parts they provided out to Oz. Ain't the world a small place these days...

G'day guys,
Does anyone run the 265 70 18's on their D3?
According to the comparison table on 1010 tires, there is a 7.86% increase in circumference which about about 200mm higher.
I really want to run the 265's but the GG AT2's only come in 255/60 or 265/70.
Has anybody got any thoughts on the matter..?

The 265 / 70 R18 will have an overall diameter of 828mm,
The Standard overall diameter is approx: 763mm so as you can see these are way bigger and will require modifications to fit.
I have 285 / 60 R18 on and they fit, there O/A size is 799mm.
The 255 / 60 R18 is the standard size.

I paid $360 each fitted & balanced last year in Vic.
I have to replace one on Tuesday next week from the same dealer as I staked one. Will post details once I find out how much one is going to cost this time.
Cheers,
Neil.

Yes - GG AT2 255/60/18 - $275 Jax Fyshwick in the ACT. The guy rang their suppliers for the price - one no longer carried GG and the price was from the second.
Seems to be in line with newer prices listed in this thread - maybe their recommended retail has been dropped.

Ordered mine from the local Tyrepower bloke, $313 fitted although I have to wait 2-3 weeks. I could have gotten $10-15 cheaper if I had been prepared to travel 50+ kms but I like to support the local mob if I can.
This is Perth obviously so have to factor in freight.,,

They look after me and after 2 hours ringing all round Perth I could only find one mob that would do them cheaper, and it was only $10 cheaper... Plus, would have had to drive 50+ kms to get them.
Not worth the hassle and as i said, they look after me...
We don't have as many vendors in Perth so our choice is a bit more limited than over east...
Why - on that price they are clearly not supporting their locals.
