I have stripped my 58 SWB S1 down to the chassis ready for sandblasting and painting and found a hand painted number 25 on top of the front cross member. Can anyone shed some light on why the number would be there and what it means.

I am only the second owner and have owned her for 40 years so can attest that this is the first time that part of the chassis has been exposed since she left Solihull. Does anyone have any idea of what the numbers mean and why hand painted?

Many thanks

Hi
It looks as if L/R painted numbers on bits as they either received them for use
I have now seen numbers painted on engines and other bits
that's my guess
cheers

Similar to barcodes and QR codes used in automotive assembly nowadays?

I have 78 painted on 'bessies' chassis...I am led to beleive it is an inspection number.
