View Full Version : TRACTION CONTROL NOISE?

Hello All,
I've been experiencing an annoying and mysterious noise when taking off from standstill, either in first or reverse, and only intermittently, ie maybe only once a week, but then it may happen 3 times in a day, and not again for another week. It sounds to me like a grinding noise from gears, not good in my opinion.
I hadn't realised, but my wife says the TC light comes on when this happens and also an electronic beeping sound, and now I'm looking for it I do see the traction control light on most of the gear grinding noise episodes.
The dealer doesn't really want to see the car until we can reproduce the problem consistently and says that the TC pump and consequent "pulsing" of the brake on the spinning wheel can sound like gears crunching. Does this sound likely to any of you? And how can I trick the TC into operating in order to confirm or disprove the diagnosis? preferably in a suburban environment.
Regards

Try pumping the brake peddle 10 times with the ignition on which I believe turns the T/C off and see if the problem happens then. Pat

Does it happen when your wife's not in the car?

Thanks for replying, how long does this turn the TC off for? do you have to do it again to turn it back on? This is a 2010 110.

I did think that, but didn't suggest it. Not that brave.

Pat303 does the TC reset to normal if you switch of and restart? This would be a great option in the sand. The TC is a pain in the backside on duens when it kills your momentum trying to stop the spinning wheel. I've been reluctant to remove fuses as suggested in earlier threads.
tieds, my missus also get the TC to make sounds on the hard stuff. I've tried, but not managed to replicate it yet...:p Regardless, the TC is a noisy afair.

Thanks for replying. Glad to hear that the TC is a noisy affair!, does it sound like gaers crunching, if only momentarily?

I read on the defender2 forum that pumping the peddle switches it off until you turn the vehicle off and restart it. Pat

The 'twaaang' when taking off is common, I get it all the time. Although when that happens the TC light does not come on.
TC in sand is not a problem if you:
1. have the correct tyre pressure
b. have the required momentum
As for disabling the ABS/TC by pumping the brake pedal 10x, it does not work on mine.

Naks,
I've done my bit of sand and dune driving all the way up the Skeleton and the Namib, courtesy of the previous regime and membership with the LROCSA.
The dunes north of Perth offer a very different environment being heavily trafficed with a lot of surface disturbance by drivers of inferiors. The fact remains that the moment a wheel kicks, the TC applies the brakes, thus breaking your momentum. Remove the ABS fuse and your back to 300Tdi configuration and the 90 is unstoppable. It does however record a failure/fault every time you do it.
After a year and a half of owning my Puma 90 my only criticism is the lack of a TC on/off switch.

I soldered a fused link and switch to my other halfs TD5 90 to turn the tc off for sand work, just file through the fuse top to the contacts, blow it out out but not in of the vehicle obviosly , solder a fused switched link in and all done and its fantastic. Easy done and works a treat. Its a modification I will do the day the warranty run out on the Puma.

Tieds, did you have any luck finding out what was causing this? I have the same thing happen regularly in my '10 Defender 90. I can't keep track on how many times it's been to the dealer. Some days it'll be fine, others it will go off everytime you take off from a standstill. It does seem to do it more when it's warm or the car been running for 15-20mins

My traction control makes noises sometimes when taking off (when not off road).
The pedals feels springy?, and I can feel the brakes being transferred to different wheels?
I would not describe the noise as gears grinding though.
The noise is the same as I hear when going up a slippery slope off road, when the TC light comes on.

I had the TC noise going off when taking off from standstill to & someone on this forum suggested tapping the sensors home with a small hammer, the two front ones are on top of the swivel pins & the rear ones on the front of the axle.
A few slight taps on each and the problem is gone !!!

I have a 2008 110 and I normally park on an slope, facing forwards or backwards. Sometimes when I drive away, the TC light comes on and I get the twaaaaaaaaaang as it does it's thing.
I'd like to think it's just Monty saying hi and asking to be taken off-road today. I suspect it's because I've let the clutch slip a little or I've brought my foot off it unevenly and one wheel is in a pothole or on slimy leaves.
I don't get an electronic "beep" though....although I do get odd random ones from time to time during normal road driving which I have no idea about. Such are Land Rovers.
