View Full Version : Bluefin remap for TD6 - review

Hi

Thought I would share my experience with the Bluefin remap product supplied by UK tuning company Superchips.

Firstly, I have no interest in anyway with Superchips, or any of the suppliers – this is my opinion.

The unit is essentially a dongle that plugs into the OBD port and allows the owner to switch between the standard and modified fuel maps. Delivery was via Aus post in 3 days from the Aus / NZ distributer (peter@superchips.co.nz)

Reading the instructions supplied it couldn’t be easier.
1. Plug the unit into the car and retrieve the original Map.
2. Load the software onto the PC
3. Run software, Plug unit into PC, fill in the screen and hit Connect. At this point your original amp is sent to Superchips
4. When ready, plug unit into PC again and it will load the modified map.
5. Plug unit into car. Easy!

Step 1 didn’t go smoothly for me at all, the unit didn’t want to connect and read the ECU, and at this stage I found that in the case of everything not going perfectly, the supplied documentation and FAQs on the website are far from adequate, boarding on disgraceful. I work in software development and if I ever supplied clients with this level of doco I’d be hung! There is also no details about how to contact them for support, but the local dealer did pass on my messages of help which received an overnight reply – all in all my impressions of the support are quite poor, without the local agent it would be non-existent.

During Step 1 the unit just hung displaying “Bluefin Communicating” on the screen, and there is nothing at all to indicate what it should be doing or displaying, and after 2 hrs of letting it go, I pulled the plug and started again, until on the 4th try (yes 4th!) it quickly changed to “Saving Data” and took about 5 minutes to complete. From this point on all went well and quite quickly, but just a word of warning: be prepared for messages on the instrument panel about failures of every system known to exist and more! Once again no mention of this anywhere. These however do go away when finished.

What’s it like? The engine runs smoother across the entire range, including idle, let’s be honest the TD6 is not a rough engine by any means but it just seems a little more refined now. Torque (claimed 505nm @ 1885rpm) has noticeably increased especially down low, resulting in significantly less gear changes when driving sedately, the lock up once engaged (3rd, 4th or 5th) stays in much longer as well. All up a significant driver experience improvment in slow to medium traffic. They claim an increase of 136mn @ 1450rpm and I’d believe it.

When pushed, it pulls much harder and goes actually better than I expected, especially from 2600-3100rpm, I have not had the chance to go for a good highway run but it pulls to 110kmh on the freeway entrance much quicker than standard. Smoke / haze is non-existent in the following headlights, actually less than original.

They claim better fuel consumption and knowing how the trip computer works I have no doubt that it will say it's improved, time will tell and I'll try and report back with actual fuel usage figures.

Summary; I’m extremely happy with the final result. This is regarded as a mild upgrade but has completely transformed the car.

Thanks Harlie

Been looking at this one myself. Was waiting for some feedback from someone before buying. Have you heard of anyone else having problems with instalation.

I could only find one other, guy over on VWWatercooled with a Golf GTI had issues but he was all sorted quickly as well, I went with them because of the big wraps from the VW boys - heaps of them used Superchips. There are several of UK fullFat members as well. I think I was a bit unlucky - probably something simple like a loose/bent pin in the units OBD plug.

Gary, has your IIDTool arrived yet?

Gary – I’m convinced that the problem I had with ECU communication was caused by the plug in my car. Saturday night we had a good play, had trouble with the Bluefin again but also had trouble with another OBD2 device that works flawlessly in other cars…

Mate of mine and I went and gave the upgrade a good test. 15% incline (top of Mount Glorious road) couple runs with remap installed and then standard. Essentially punished the poor thing with a test that involved just holding it flat from a standing start on the 15% incline and record speed at a mark. On average 19km/h difference which is huge. The device he had was an impressive data logger that runs off OBD2 which showed boost of 1.3bar (maxed at 1.38 - 20psi) but what surprised us was the inlet temp, no mater how hard we tried the worst recorded was 9 deg above abient while being cruel (as soon as the air flow increased through the front it dropped), 7 above while climbing the range (more like a normal person) and general cruising around the top of the range 2-4. It went over 20 above when we stopped facing away from the wind (collecting heat from the radiator) immediately after a standing start run but that’s not really fair to it – actually very surprised at the intercooler performance…

I removed the intercooler from mine a few months back and it is a fair lump of a thing, much bigger than any other 4wd's I've seen and it sits in a good spot for airflow also, you'll notice the stone guard acts like a venturi which would help the airflow along, impresive design all up the Td6. Pat

Hi Harlie

All sound very good. By any chance did you measure exhaust gas temp on your punishing runs up hill. Also was there a diffence in boost psi.

Hi Gary

All is going great, Peak Boost is up only a tad over standard but comes on much earlier and is significantly higher over the range. There's no EGT sensor on the L322.

Big difference noticed is towing, is just soooo much nicer.

Fuel consumption is unchanged if calculated (you know the old way - km travelled v L pumped in), but according to the trip computer consumption has dropped heaps which is understandable given the way it works, be nice to have that recalibrated… It showed 8.1 the other day haha

Hi Harlie

Good to hear all is going well with your TD6 tune. Be nice if you were getting 8.1lt/ 100 HA HA :)

Thanks Gary

Harlie

I installed the Bluefin on our 2011 Discovery 4 2.7lt last week and am extremely disappointed with the restuls.

Superchip have been helpful in supplying us with 3 different files but it still does not give us any of the promies:

Every bluefin optimisation delivers:

an engine that responds more eagerly to your right foot
smoother power delivery making town driving much easier with fewer gear changes
improved acceleration for safer overtaking

For turbocharged diesel cars

up to 30% more torque and more power
fuel economy improvements

In fact the car has a dead spot at take off and when you put your foot down to accelerate it hesitates.
The cruise control wont hold is speed
It has lost top end power.

We and not happy with ours.

Has any one else had any problems with theres like this.

This morning with the 3rd file installed coming to work, I notice a couple of things;

1) The car seems to have improved power and torque

2) The turbo lag off idle seems to be a bit better over the previous 2 files

3) I don't think it drives as well as it did with the standard file.

So this afternoon, I will see how it goes, then put the standard file back on and see if there is as much differance as Bluefin claim.

Baz.

Baz - sounds like they have supplied the wrong files - ie for a different spec car, maybe a D3 spec file (whats the diff between 2.7 D4 & D3?). I had similar experience with the TD5 several years ago (supplied by BAS), turned out to be a file for a different model ECU:clap2:.

Go back to them and YELL! I know how you feel - I remember it took several weeks to get my TD5 right and at the time, all I could think was "Why bother?", but it was worth it when they got it right.

It has transformed the RR, did the 2.0tdi Golf couple weeks ago and we are wrapped with it as well (reason I went with them is the number of happy VW owners). I've not spoken with any one who has done a D4.

Hammer them!! I'm with you - If it doesn't drive as well as standard (driveability is more important than max power/torque) then it's no good, send it back with "Try again!"

Hi Baz . Sorry to here your not happy with your Bluefin. As Harlie said stick it up em. Did you get yours from Peter James ( Superchips Aus & NZ ) or through one of the dealers in Australia. I have been going to get one for my TD6, just waiting on money.
