Hey guys just wondering if anybody upgraded the standard speakers in a new defender 90 and what your recommendations are?
Prob keep same size to make life easier but want a good sound. I am going to change head unit to possibly a digital radio to help with signal.
Any ideas?

Hopefully somone will reply here soon also, as i will be looking to do the same to my 2012 90
been looking at the Pioneer MVH-8350BT for the head deck, and maybe some focal 4" splits as Ive been told the defender only has 4" speakers?
Ive seen a few small slimline woofers installed behind the 'cubby box' not sure what they were though.

G'day. Try changing the regional settings on the radio as this made an improvement to the audio quality and base response in my defender. There is a good thread in the defender section which details how to do this. It also made a huge improvement to the radio reception!

The defender only has 4" speaker all round with top mounted tweeters on the dash. The standard speakers are just awful with cheap paper cones. Any set of aftermarket 4" speakers costing more than $40 for a pair will set you well on the way. If you get a heavy set of twins (speaker and tweeter in one) it would be a good idea but you might want to disconnect the defender tweeters in the dash or else have too much treble. good twins are more like $100 plus.
The wiring is also a tiny gauge so a quality signal will also improve the sound. Again any good head unit will improve on the standard and you might as well get something with auxiliary input (USB or jack) and Bluetooth if you can afford it. The Bluetooth streamed music does not sound as good as it could though a USB plug but the phone systems on these units work well enough. Even in a defender.
Also if you want to really crank it you can't go past a pioneer space saving sub woofer :) google it.

I replaced my whole system with a Clarion brand, but I'd imagine any brand will be better than standard. Just go middle to upper quality in the range and you'll be happy.
I kept the dash tweeters and replaced the under dash with 3 ways.
Also mounted some 4" 3 ways in the hood lining just behind the seam. Simple to do but require a wood/plastic hoop to screw into to mount the speaker securely. Good sound as it projects in out and down a touch. I also have some 6" behind the seats which you guys don't have. Added a slim sub in there as well which was definitely a good thing, so find space for one.
Ran all the wiring along the roof channel and down the pillars. Use a plastic tool plug removal tool to remove the lining plugs, LR want $7 each to replace them and there buggers to get out and easily trashed.
My head deck has bluetooth which works great with the phone and music stash; no cables, no CD's

Ive done similar to newhue, replacement 4in fronts, decent 6in rears but i have also built my own sub box, fits very well inside of the back of the 130 and sounds great, plenty of pics in my build up thread in the members ride section.
as for the MVH-8350BT, i have the 8250bt which is almost identical just slight cosmetic changes saved myself about 150 by going the older model - there is no difference in features. ive seen them for around 260-280, but personally i would now go for something else, i dont like the interface its quite difficult to use as the dial is very touchy and painful to use when moving in the defender. Unless you like the interface i would try something else.

In my new 2.2 Puma 90 I had nolimitsectronics.com.au in Port Melbourne change the radio to a DAB one, put some Hertz 4" speakers front and back in the standard fittings, keep the stock tweeters and attach a Blaupunkt powered subwoofer to the back of the cubby box. Best stereo I have ever had!

Hey Laro,
Would be great to see a pic of the subwoofer
I've installed a new headunit with bluetooth and ipod cable (runs into the centre box to charge and keep ipod out of the way), also upgraded the 4 speakers to new sony ones
Sounds much better but definitely want to add a sub...just struggling to find a good spot to put it without being in the way of the rear area for passengers and gear in the back
Cheers,
Marco

And a picture of the powered Blaupunkt sub woofer attached to the back of the cubby box. It taken from the top. I have a cargo barrier and the back is full of s.... - so this is the best I can do :-(
