Exhaust on 300Tdi Defender

The exhaust on my 300Tdi is a bit ratty and I'm looking at possibilities to replace it. Anything which liberated a bit more power (if possible) would be welcome.

The headers are, I think, 2 1/2" ?? If so, then maybe an exhaust of matching diameter would be good.

I'm not averse to a straight through, as long as people don't thiink it's likely to be a cop magnet.

Would it be possible to retro-fit a muffler to a straight-through pipe, if circumstances so required ?

All advice welcomed, and if anyone has an idea of what costs might be involved too ?

The 300tdi is 60mm - a metric fitting. 2.5in is 63, 2.25 is 57. Not many places have dies (or pipe) in metric. I had two sections with flanges made in 2.5in to replace the middle muffler and rear silencer on my Disco. I used just one sports muffler and it's a step up from normal but not too extreme. Stay away from the franchise muffler places. ( Long story)

my 300tid was quite thankful for the 3 inch mandrel bent system I had installed. Just get one good muffler/sports type. You want less back pressure with a turbo and tune header length is not important on these engines

I had mine done by Taipan xp on the GC, they are at burliegh. They use those vortex mufflers which are a bit of a mistry...seem to work and they get good results from them....but maybe they are a snake oil???

If you dont know anyone your way, maybe ask MR Automotive....

Suggest you check out A Muffler Mart at Rocklea (3274 2255). Craig there made up a straight through pipe with a resonator replacing the two mufflers for my 90. It sounds a bit throaty (you've probably heard it) but it certainly increases hill climbing performance.

My 1998 Defender 130 300TDi runs a straight through 2 1/2" pipe - no mufflers. My mate runs The Muffler Shop at Cleveland and cost would be around $300 - $400. Only down side is that the bends are NOT mandrel bends - just press bends, but there are not many acute angle bends along the route so I wasn't fussed. As for loudness, there is a slight turbo whine, but I can't notice much of an increase in actual noise. There is a noticeable gain in performance. I am considering an intercooler upgrade next.

my 300tdi tray back runs the original muffler at the back and a hot dog where the original under floor muffler fits as the original cracked out.
I keep threatening the kids to put a canon and straight through on it when next on special but all the J*P crap uses smaller pipe diameters. If you can run straight through and it's not too noisy would be my preference. Turbo is a pretty good muffler.

My old series 3 trayback ran a hot dog and short pipe exit in front of the rear wheel but became an RTA magnet so had to be careful. Eventually went to a normal muffler and it didn't make much difference.

The muffler guys in Brendale are cost effective and can weld. ;)

$200 from memory, straight through, normal bends, standard size with a piece of flex stuff up front
