S2/S3 brake drums - differences?

Does anybody know if there are any differences between the Series 2A brake drums and the Series 3 version, apart from the stud size?

The only references I can find are that S3 drums do not fit S2s because "the wheel studs are bigger on the S3", but apart from that are they the same? Will an S3 hub fit straight on an S2 that has 16mm studs fitted? (Assuming both are SWB 10" drums).

Yes (more or less), drums are the same part number for the 88 from suffix G 2a up to S3 June 1980 (after that they went to 11" brakes).

As far as the hubs fitting, same applies - hubs are the same from 2a suffix G to S3 June 1980. Beyond that you have to swap the stub axle as well, as the wheel bearings are different (both the same size).

it depends....

dont forget there is a difference in drum width some are something like 2 inches wide and others are nearer 3.

if you buy the series II ones as the PCD of the rims is the same you can just machine out the sII drums to fit a SIII (assuming the width is the same)

The width difference is only on 11" drums. Originally came with the six and V8/Isuzu, but extended to all 109s in 1980. But, of course, you can never be certain that the brakes (or other bits) currently fitted are the same as the way it left the factory!

Various references would suggest that the brake shoes for the SWB Series LR's are pretty much the same. In fact one ad on eBay (OK, I know!) lists a set of shoes as fitting Series 1,2,2A,3 and D90....

I know that the LWB 2A shoes vary in width between the 4cyl and 6cyl, but for the SWB's they seem to all be the same, with just the cylinders varying between front and rear. That would suggest that the drum width would be the same.... maybe!

Ive got a set of 2A drums for the SWB and have drilled the stud holes with a drill press and lube, with a HSS 16.5mm drill bit off fleabay for $7.00 and they work well. They are chinese drill bits 7 bucks free postage and surprisingly good. Good for that job anyway. W.
