i have just started re-doing a ,49 series 1 and have found that that the steering column thrust bearing is shot and i am wondering where would be the best place/site for a replacement?

Do you mean the ball race at the top of the column?
If so FWD,s in Melb were selling the races NOS on ebay . I bought one for a spare. Just go to the bearing shop and buy 18 of 7/32" balls to put in there.
You biggest problem most likely will be wear in the brass nut.
