Trying to install the EGT probe in my 300Tdi , and it doesn't fit in. It appears either the hole in the plate needs to be inclined, or the probe needs to be bent.
Is it safe/necessary to bend the probe?

Not sure about bending your particular probe, but you are right on the 300Tdi needing either an offset hole drilled or a hole drilled on an angle, otherwise the probe fouls on the manifold stopping it from going a decent distance in.
Rather than risk bending the probe, I just got another plate and tapped the hole off centre (I think that's what I did ).

If the hole needs to been angled I'd been disappointed as the plate I was supplied has a straight hole :<

You are right, all the pics I have seen of supplied ones have the fitting straight and right in the middle.
I got a blank plate made and then just tapped right in the middle as I'd seen, only to find the same problem you are having.
I think you probably can gently bend the probe without damage, but it was easy for me to get another plate made.
The second was tapped off centre so the probe didn't foul.
The other problem with a bent probe is that you may not be able to remove it without taking the plate off and bending it straight again.
Not that I've removed the probe in years, but might be a consideration.

Just a thought - I ended up with a straight hole, but offset a little bit towards the top of the engine - could your supplied plate also be offset a little bit and you have it upside down?

I tried both ways. The official word is bend the pin.

It probably makes no difference if you bend it.
I certainly have used heaps of very bent thermocouples and they always worked fine.
Even those thin buggers which bend when you look at them.

Yep, need to be bent. Here are the installation video:

I bent mine as per the videos with no dramas, 5 sec job with a ring spanner, it is a fairly robust probe so won't snap or spring back etc.
