Date stamps on diff housing's and wheels

G'day All,

Ive finally started the restoration progress on my 54 107, and am gather a load of bits to take down to be sand blasted (chassis, bulkhead, diff housings and numerous other bits).
I just have a few quick questions for you, firstly where is the date stamp/serial number located on the front diff housing? I have 2 here and would like to keep the serial numbers as close as possible.
Also the Australian produced 'ROK' wheels of the era, did these also have a date?
Do you guys have a preference for finishes for the chassis? I have heard that POR15 is meant to be pretty good, are there any others i should know about?

AFAIK the axle housings only have an assembly number which should match the RHD Home market version of your model. The number is near the top of the long side between the diff banjo and springs - on the side away from the gearbox (other side to where the diff bolts in).

ROK rims are dated month/year on the inside in the valley, so can only be viewed with the tyres off the rim. You would really have to be an anorak to ask an owner to remove his tyres to check the date.

POR is very expensive . I use the Hichem brand etch grey primer . It's about $60 for 4 litres and sold everywhere . It also adheres to the birmabrite panels very well , but apply it in thin layers only . Often paint shops will sell you cans of mis-tinted paint for 1/2 price. It's ideal as a base over the primer to seal it .

Thanks for the info guys, ive wanted to keep the old banger reasonably original. At least i now wont have to worry about bieng so pedantic about the wheels!
I am planning on spraying the inside of the chassis rails with lanolin, i use it quite alot with the vineyard equipment. Are there any other oils/waxes that will do a simmilar job that hang around a little longer?

Use Penetrol if you want to be serious about stopping rust,
