Hey Guy’s
Just about to buy new shocks for the PUMA.
Looking at Bilsteins, but they are only available to suit upto a 30mm lift (I have 50mm in the front). While this is probably be okay, I have been told that 80 series cruiser front shock (Part No B46-1477s) are a perfect fit for a D'fer with 50mm lift?
Any first hand knowledge or experience on this ?
The supplier has already said that as they are not going to be fitted to the correct vehicle, no refund will be available.
Too much money to get it wrong…..

I would be careful with the front drive shaft angles at full drop running the cruiser shocks, did you replace your front shaft with a DC joint shaft yet?

Hey Cal,

Brand new "Brit-Part" DC shaft sitting on the bench waiting to go in. I was just waiting for the new shocks.

Are you aware of this idea to fit cruiser shock in a D'fer ?

Yes its a common swap, i think they are about 3-4in longer at full extension IIRC, do you know the open and closed lengths of the shocks?

No I don't, apparently............they are a perfect length open and closed for a 50mm lift.

I think more research is required before I part with the hard earned...

ive heard about it too.......but make sure they are 2 inches longer at full extension then your standard shocks.....

i just got some terrafirma big bores for the back of my fender.......
im running a 2 inch lift so got the shocks to suit......made such a difference.....
...that as soon as i get some funds together.....i will also replace the fronts as well.......

you basically need your shocks to be 2 inches longer at full extension that the standard shocks you had on there......
and everything should work as close as possible to how it was intended to work......

doesnt matter what brand the shocks are......its the lengths you need to worry about.....and also the rate of the shocks.......

Hey Stig

Thanks for that info. Do you have a 50mm lift springs in the front ?

Were the 80's much longer that the stock length ? Had any problems ?

Thanks

i gota 3" lift allthe way round, cant remeber off the top of me head of the linths but they were about 4ish inces longer then standed rover shocks, they gave me them as they dident have rover ones,

i do think they are valved a lil hard but nothing to complane about,

i think they work out to be crusers 2" longger then standed shocks???

Why the DC propshaft? Does the OEM one not cope with a 2" lift? I thought they were supposed to...

Don't forget the output flange of the transfer case will have to be changed to a D2 one to suit the bolt pattern of the DC shaft,

mine works with the lift and long shocks and dident vibrate, but i swaped to a DC joint cos i got one near free, if its going onto a puma its gota 90% chance it will vibrate at even small lifts,

Hey Naks,

Lot of PUMA’s have vibration and binding issued with 50mm lift.

Not mine but I only have stock shocks, with the longer shocks I will get full down travel and don’t to worry about vibrations or binding.

Hence the DC shaft.

make sure you are getting LC shocks that are for a lifted LC....and check your closed length comparded to your bumpstop...make sure there is atleast 1 full inch of travel left in the shock with axle touching bumpstop. an easy way is to mark the shock with a black sharpie before install. fully extend and run a ring around it using the outer body as the guide marker, then full close it and do the same. Put a mark half way between these to for a refference also.......
