Hi all, just got some new vent seals, for the 2a, does anyone know which is the best adhesive to use, to stick them in place, these stick onto the bulhead, not the vents

Cheers Andrew

They should be self adhesive (I think). Isn't there paper on one side to peel off?

EDIT - Nope, silly me. I'm thinking of the seals that go on the vents. - sorry.

Check out the Sikaflex website and see if they recommend anything,

I used contact cement about ten years ago - still perfectly OK today. It is not a very demanding application, all it has to do is to stop the rubber falling out when the vent is open.

Black silastic from Repco. Cheap and a good strong bonding rubber compound. Good for sealing up torn or damaged automotive rubber boots.

Silastic isn't actually an adhesive and the black stuff is slightly acidic so it has the potential to create a source of rust. Sika flex is an adhesive. Years ago (berfore sika) I just used contact adhesive.

John is on track with his advice. I just finished putting new seals on mine with Selly's QUIK-GRIP, it is readily available from hardware stores and supermarkets and does a fantastic job of bonding rubber to (clean) metal.

Silastic is perfect for the job! You can use quik grip if you like however silastic is a better option. As for attracting rust thats codswallop.

Silastic brand silicone elastomers have a range of applications. In the automotive industry they are used for making gaskets, spark plug boots, hoses and other components that must operate over a broad temperature range and resist oil and coolants. The elastomers are widely used in the architectural, aerospace, electronic, food and beverage, textile and transportation industries for molding, coating, adhesion and sealing. Because of their inert nature, medical grade Silastic brand silicone elastomers are important materials in numerous medical and pharmaceutical devices including catheters, pacemaker leads, tubing and wound dressings.

Yes but raw uncured silicone contain and releases acids during cure. Different silicones have different uses. I was only refering to black in particular, the smell it has is additives that assist in it's cure and reistance in oil rich environments.
