Drivesafe's FFRR's episode of an inappropriate activation of the steering column lock combined with my D4's regular 'steering column locked' message after driving off and its regular failure to start without cycling the ignition, I got around to checking the effect of changing the CCF to indicate that a steering column lock was not fitted. I'm pleased to report that the lock no longer trys to activate or deactivate and the engine now always starts immediately the button is pressed if the brake pedal is already pressed.

After having driven over 2K kms since this was done and having started the engine many times, I'm very confident that the steering lock ecu will not try to activate the lock in the event of a dramatic loss of battery voltage. IME Drivesafe's FFRR lost sight of the key because of low voltage yet still had enough voltage for the steering column ecu to activate the lock and did so because lock conditions were then met. There are now no conditions with my D4 that require the steering column lock to be activated, thereby hopefuly avoiding even the remotest of possibilities of the same low voltage sequence occurring with my D4. The corrected start-up is a bonus but should have been like that anyway.

I've must of missed a post somewhere. I get this message now an then about the steering lock.

What was the solution?

Initially my D4 got the steering lock message very frequently. Since a software update it seemded to be fixed but then started occurring reasonably frequently again. I didn't disable the steering lock to prevent the message occurring but I'm pleased that the message no longer appears, along with the engine now always starting first attempt.
