Guys. I bought a new 4WD and it's not a landy
Does this mean I should leave the forum?
What is it??? Well it's German
Why? Well I needed a dual cab ute. I wanted to upgrade from the 2010 Holden dunnydore ute to a ute I can take my boys out in. It had to be big enough to use as my work trade ute and small enough to get in 2.1m carparks with ladders on the roof. So I shopped for all the jap utes. Problem was the ride and quality. Then I looked at the VW Amarok. Fell in love. Chose a 2wd version last month and ordered it. Delivery was Dec this year. So I wait and wait. After some weeks and talking to many people the resale question was mentioned several times. So today I went in and upgraded to the 4wd. Yes they are a real 4wd with diff locks and low range.
I ordered a limited edition and delivery is in 2 weeks. Yay for me. Now how does one pay for this !!!!!
Why I did not buy a landy !!!! 110 dual cabs are not big enough in the load space. Also the height with a roof rack and ladders is well over 2.3 meters.
So will I use it as a 4wd??? Hell yes. I'll take it out to see what it can and can't do. Then I'll go home and get the county and recover it. ;)

Looks a good option, particularly with cruise and rear diff lock, and maybe alloys. Pity there's no auto yet.
I expect you'll be getting the pearl paint.

Hi Clarke
May not be a landy. Probably better :wasntme: If the budget would go that far I'd have an Amarok. Auto due early next year with more power & torque.

ummm. I'm just wondering if I should go to the VW forum and tell them I bought a Land Rover. I'm sure they would be just as interested there as I am hearing from you here.

I had the same problems last year. I needed a dual cab work ute that could fit into carparks with a ladder on the roof etc and I am finding it much harder to lift heavy materials from a high roof these days. I also wanted an auto as I spend plenty of time stuck in peak hour traffic on so called freeways and inner city Melbourne. I waited for 2 years for the Amarok to be released and all the VW dealers could tell me is they could not tell me the release date. We already have a VW Passat.
I could not even bring myself to look at a Hilux, was not impressed with the D40 Nissan or its dealers and I have a couple of mates with Tritons who are less than impressed with the new 2.5 litre motor. I ended up with a Dmax. Got an extremely good deal from a local dealer and so far it has done 40.000 kms and does everything I expected it to do. An Amarok would have been nice although if I had waited another 12 months I would most likely looked at the new Ford Ranger. It is a pity Landrover did not have a vehicle that suited my needs.

If I land a real job when I graduate first thing I'll be buying is one of these!! Bloody decent beast.
If some people are getting upset that others wish to talk about other vehicles in "General Chat", perhaps you might like to hear about the spot of diarrhoea I had today... or should I take that to a toilet forum? Well I rather enjoy a good cathartic episode, makes me feel like Tony Abbott. Whoops, politics.

Yeah they are a nice ride. Be interesting to see how it is off road. We all know it's not a 110 or disco. But im hoping the build quality pays off. I did look serious about buying a 130. But size was an issue. R
The height would have been a problem. Plus a 130 or 110 still drive like my 2001 110.
Yeah an auto v6 diesel Amarok would be nice. But I'm not waiting for sept next year to even see the auto. The bigger engine is not destined for Oz in anytime soon.
Best part. Same stud pattern as the p38 and d2 ect. So it may get shod with a nice set of 32" simex ET's to turn some heads. Lol
Cost?? No change out of $50k with the options !!!!

Totally understand that. That's why I bought the VE ute last year. Will miss the power greatly. Nothing nicer than nailing it and even with 400kg of tools in it, being able to black track. ;)
The dmax was 2nd choice over the Amarok. I drove the triton and laughed. The Nissan is outdated in it's looks and ride. The lowlux was nice. But just too Japanese. The finish is not nice enough. Plus drive like a 4wd. The Amarok is the only one that drove like a sedan. Ok. Not exactly, but damn close. I jumped out of the rok into the defender and laughed. Poor landrover. I live my 110's. But it's not a 4wd I can drive everyday. A 110 is built for a job. And that is to be the best 4wd avail. The Rok is a pretend 4wd. I'm the 1st admit that. But it will still do more than anyone who owns one will expect. After I get it, I'll be heading up to Innaminka for a road test. Will let you know how I go.

Why would anyone buy a hilux??
Sounds like the DC100 defender will be similar to these vehicles, I can't

That was my thoughts. Toyota dont offer mechanical diff locks either. Toyota dual cabs also are not a 1100kg pay load.
I'd love to have bought a defa. But it did not suit my exact needs.
Road review will come. Mmmm Ellis track???

What made you laugh about the 2.5 Triton? Just curious as I have one as a company vehicle/daily driver and I have no complaints apart perhaps from the external styling and the seating ergonomics (I cannot quite get the seat adjusted so it feels just right). I did not have a choice of vehicles and it wouldnt have been at or near the top of the list if I did, however it rides a lot better than a Hillux, has from what I can see the longest tray of the dual cabs and a 3000kg towing capacity. Down low it has no torque, which detracts from the driving experience a bit but once it gets going, its more than adequate. Surprisingly, once up and moving it tows a heavy load better than my old TD42 turbo patrol, but this is probably typical of all the modern common rail 4 cyl diesels. Or maybe its because it doesnt have an egt gauge and I dont have to back off....
Still, there is no doubt that the Amarok is a much nicer vehicle, even if it is 10k + more.

Not really a fair call...
That thing was so poorly loaded it was going to break!
There's a thread about a 130 that broke on here somewhere too!

Not sure why you are saying it was poorly loaded, if you read the thread and take the owner at his word then it was loaded ok and was underweight.
I have read plenty of threads and I mean plenty like this one about crew cabs bending in the middle like this Triton did. It is not unique to Tritons either, a common point keeps coming up that the owner has fitted airbags to the suspension which seems to act as a pivot point which leads to the chassis bending in front of the airbags. This more often then not happens when towing a off road trailer in the bush or a heavy van.
I had a couple of SsangYong Musso crew cabs that share a similar design to all other crew cabs. The guys who worked for me incorrectly loaded a trailer that one of the Musso's was towing back from Winton Raceway, we stopped for fuel about 200 k's up the road and noticed that the tub was over a inch further spaced at the top to the bottom of the cab. So even on a smooth highway the chassis had bent, if it had not been noticed I'd hate to thik how bad it could have got by the time we got all the way home.
Personally now that I know what I know about this type of vehicle I would think very seriously about buying any crew cab especially for towing off road.
cheers,
Terry

With the weight of those 2 spare tires and the trailer it would require a pretty clever mathematician to work out the forces on the chassis.
Obviously the Triton engineers didnt take into consideration the way these vehicles would be used in a place like Aussie.
They look like a disaster when you see them on the road in standard trim as it is. Lets see what they are like in another 10 years.

Yeah see what happens. But remember it's a 400nm truck and euro. So when you compare it to a 2.5 pom landy. They survive 300k plus. Well my defender did until it met a puddle. Reminds me. I need to fix it !!!!

Read somewhere that in Europe they come with a 5 year 200,000 mile warranty, the motors that good. I've been looking at trading my work van (T5 Transporter) and been looking at the iload or another transporter, the iload because its $10k cheaper, but its just not in the same league. Love the VW:)

VW make good solid, stuff, it's just that they can be just a little predictable and dull!
I'm on my second ever VW, a Golf Bluemotion, and the first one I ever had, a Passat Sport 20v Turbo, was sold after 3 years with 100,000 miles on the clock and it didn't have so much as a single squeak or rattle in the interior. Beautifully put together car.
However, I get more of a smile on my face when I drive the Disco.:p
(And yes, I like the look of the Amarok though it wouldn't fit with the type of vehicle we use, SWMBO was umming and ahhing about changing her Merc ML for a V10 TDi Touareg a couple of months back though )
