Hi guys,
your thoughts please.
I read recently the a subtle but obvious difference between a 2 and a 2A is the head light surrounds. 2's have a chrome retaining hoop, where as 2A's have a painted one in body colour.
can anyone clarify this please.

As with many other "differences between models" this is not an accurate distinction. In UK Home Market assembled vehicles, I believe you are correct, and the type of headlight changed at about the transition from 2 to 2a. However, this change did not happen in Australia, and the earlier headlight type was continued until the lights moved to the mudguards, simply because these lights were manufactured in Australia and the new type were not. Similar variations will apply to other model changes and other assembly locations which all had varying degrees of local content.
The only definitive difference between the Series 2 and early Series 2a is the addition of a "A" suffix to the chassis number and the availability of the 2.25 diesel instead of the 2.0.

Another difference is the panel for the headlights

The early 2 Panel is flat and the later one is pressed with a raised surround .

There are many other major differences between a 2 and a 2a

I have to respectfully disagree - most, if not all, of these differences did not happen at the change from 2 to 2a. There was progressive change in a vast number of areas throughout Series 2/2a (and 3) production, but to say they happened at one point where an 'A' was added to the chassis number is not correct.

Thanks gentlemen,
To hopefully stop any confusion this is all I have at the moment, awaiting numbers to confirm.

I agree, I have a 1964 Rover Australia price list, it marks all Australian made parts. Certainly by this time refering to Au built LRs as "CKD" is probably a misnomer, "Au assembled" is prob better. Even 80" & Series 1 parts were made in Au, so at what point they went from true CKD I don't know. There were customs duty implications, so I presume the price list was marked thus to help proove to customs the proportion of Au parts that were included in assembly. Local parts were sometimes different to the UK version &/or didn't change at the same time.
