Looking at taking a train ride tomorrow to check out the Sydney Markets at Flemington. After looking at the website, it gives me the impression they're not really geared for tourists, with the Haymarket site more the go.
Anyone able to give me the good oil?

Sydney Markets are the biggest wholesale markets in the Southern hemisphere and over 50% of australian produce pass through them.
To see the action you should be there by about 7AM.
The most tourism oriented part is the flower market and Chinese market which are in the shed furtherest from the train station.

do not think flemmington is what your after, unless you want a truck load of fruit. :D
head into the city to haymarket, then wander into chinatown for lunch or around darling harbour, any luck it might be dry....
or alternate closer would be parramatta westfield or penrith westfield, both easily accessable from the train stations.

That's what I gathered - an old bloke at the place I'm staying here told me Flemington was the go.
Haymarket seems better, and closer to Yum Cha ;)

Flemington has a public shed open on Saturday mornings - sell by the kg and case, not so much by the pallet, also has some fish, meat, smallgoods, bakery. Best to get there between five and six, by seven it's shoulder to shoulder.
Sydney Fish Markets do a tour, watch the auctions, etc. - Tours (http://www.sydneyfishmarket.com.au/AttheMarket/Tours/tabid/72/Default.aspx)
For foodie markets - Organic Food Markets - Sydney's leading operator of Organic Food & Farmers Markets (http://www.organicfoodmarkets.com.au/)
Orange Grove in Lilyfield is good, all done by midday.
Blackheath Growers' Market is on this Sunday - Blackheath Growers' Market | Australian Farmers' Markets Association (http://www.farmersmarkets.org.au/markets/blackheath-growers-market)
Last time I went it was more pre-prepared than specialist produce, and not huge.

They also have a flea market (2nd hand goods) undercover on the ground floor of the multi story car park every Saturday. You will find usual 2nd hand unwanted junk with some cheap new items/tools as well. In the past I got some great bargains before my trip around Oz. Used steel jerry cans, heavy duty shackles, chains, new shovel (50% cheaper than bunnings), axe etc. Worth a look.
