View Full Version : How to "re-set" the rain sensor on D3??

Gday...

I had a new windscreen fitted last Friday. Now the wiper function is not operating as it did before the new windscreen.

Before new screen - I would set wiper control stalk on 'Intermittent' and when the ignition was turned to 'accessory' or 'on' the wipers would do nothing if the windscreen 'sensor area' was dry (or free of bugs). Then only if 'rain' occured to the 'sensor area', the wiper would operate, once if water was cleared, or continually if 'rain' continued to occur.

After new screen - With the wiper control stalk on 'intermittent', when I turn the key to 'accessory' or to 'on' the wiper gives one wipe instantly and returns to the bottom of the screen. Then no futher wipes occur unless the sensor area gets 'rain'. It then works properly dependent on the amount of 'rain' the sensor is subjected to.

I assume there must be a "re-set" of some sort so the wiper does not operate as soon as ignition is activated ??? but I cannot locate anything in the ever-helpful Owner's Manual.

Can anyone asist please?

Cheers
John

I had the same problem with my D4.

The rain sensor needed to be changed as well. This was covered by insurance.

The sensor is on the windscreen and the connetion is under the rear vision mirrow I think.
The installer should have checked and should fix this for you now or he should pay to fix up the error. Replacing my windscreen scared off two people untill one who new how to do it was located when gettting a road worthy in Vic a few years ago.:)
If your installer did not know now to do the job- he/she shouldn't have mucked around with your car. There is also genuine and non genunie windscreens which might complicate it a little.

I would bet on the sensor not being connected correctly or the wrong part or just poor instalatation - Good luck.

Gday...

The installer was O'Brien's Glass in Townsville QLD - and they have fitted a number in D3's and D4's with no problems.

They were very helpful and rang LR dealer in Townsville who advised the computer would need to "re-learn" the rain sensor - software glitch apparently - 60sec job @ $70 charge.

So I just got back from Townsville where the dealer re-installed the software (it took two attempts actually) and all is now fixed. O'Brien's paid the bill and the whole espisode (screen and rain sensor fix) covered by my insurance.

I spoke with the Service Mgr at dealer and he had not had to do this before with windscreen changes - but he had heard of it having to be done by some other dealers.

Thanks for the responses.

I had my last screen done by O'Brians in Townsville without a problem.
I also find the Townsville dealers service center OK.

Gday...

Yes - both O'Brien's and the LR dealer were excellent to deal with.

G'Day John, I have a similar problem with my D3.
I too leave the wiper stalk on intermittenet but when I start and stop the car the wipers come on once only??

I have tried a hard reset with out success.

I have had the car for about a month now and it was fine when I first bought it, but seems be happening on a more reguar occurance now.

Would you suggest taking it to a LR dealer and see if there a problem with the software?

Thanks Darren

Gday...

Given my experience I would suggest have a talk to the Service Manager at your local dealer (or search through this forum for recommended 'experts' in WA who may be better than the dealer) before you book it in for any attention.

When I had the problem in Townsville the LR Service Manager had not heard of the problem previously. However, one of his mechanics had "heard of other LR technicians in other dealerships who had come across it".

In my instance, as I say below, they felt it required the reinstalation of the "rain sensor software" and if that is what they did, it fixed it. It is still performing perfectly now about 6 weeks on.

If the dealer (or other reliable LR fix-it dude) has heard of the problem, they may have another solution or they will just reinstall the software ... cost me $74 - the job takes less than a minute apparently.

G,day, I think I have found out why my wipers were coming on once when the ignition was turned on and off.

The car I bought had an after market DVD player/sunvisor fitted to the front passenger side.
I removed it, and put back the original sun visor and since then, the car has been fine.............
There must have been some sought of wiring fault when the DVD payer was pluged in???
What a releif..............it was really getting anoying.
