View Full Version : Inappropriate or Pointless Land Rover Modifications...

I came across a landie near work. A nice TD5 130. I was surprised to see a dual exhaust sticking out the side:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I thought that maybe it has been converted to a V6 or V8...
(btw - the exhaust is illegal of course, since it exits forward of the rearmost opening window)
However then I looked underneath to see:

So - who else has pics of pointless / ricer mods on landies :D

not illegal at all, ADRs changed a while ago to allow side exhausts, from memory it is now as long as they are rear of the door like Lakeside Pipes

Inappropriate modification lol
Why is it inappropriate? Pointless yes but just because people own a Land Rover doesn't mean they cant be tools.
Some would look at roof lights, 36 inch tyres, 5 inch suspension lifts and any of the other P3nis extensions and say they are inappropriate.
The one that always amuses me is the guys who do SOA conversions to 40 Series Land Cruisers and put V8s in them
In standard form they were the most unstable thing I have ever used off road without doing this to them.

when I was looking for a 130 i found a td5 with a exhaust similar to that.
exact same spot but had two pipes the whole way though.
man it was loud... was cool for about a minute and then got annoying.
and i'm only 21...
it was funny to see people quickly wind up their windows up as you pulled up next to them at the lights. yummy exhaust fumes to the face!

Check again. The exhaust must exit behind all opening doors/windows. AFAIK the 130 has a rear window that opens?

I believe it also has to exit on the drivers side if it is out the side of the car.

you need to do the aviation thing, when in normal range, have all the needles pointing vertical, so a quick glance will tell you if anything is wrong

Also used to be done in rally cars... when rally cars had 'real' gauges...:D

In a disco/rr the doors include part of the rear wheel arch so again lakeside exhausts aren't opening after the last opening window and therefore would be illegal.

Yes but the picks are of a 130 and the pipes come out behind the rear door and rear side window. AFAIK any window behind that is exempt.
I spoke to the RTA about this last year after seeing a lot of similar mods and Lakeside pipes making a comeback and was informed there were changes made to allow these pipes due to the fact there was little impact. A good example is a lot of station wagons actually have wind down windows, so does exactly the same effect.
I looked at it as was thinking about doing a Torana race replica and part of that required a side exhaust behind the passenger door and was told by an RTA inspector that this was OK, 2 door with an opening window behind the exhaust tip.

Cut and pasted from elsewhere.
The NCOP states that is has to protrude past the rear most side entry door or window, however ADR 42/00 states that...
"the exhaust outlet must extend at least 40 mm beyond the furthermost
outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan which is not continuously
welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of
exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but not beyond the
perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan;"
And
"the exhaust outlet must be as near as practicable to the rear of the vehicle"
May be legal based on the NCOP, however probably not based on the ADRs.

Myself reading that I would interperate the 130 being fine. The very grey issue is what constitutes the door or window. If we are determining a door such as a cargo hatch or a rear door like a 110 or most station wagons then we should not have an exhaust at all.;) many buses and trucks certainly dont conform strictly to this.
Is it a case of an entry exit point into the vehicle accessible by occupants or any window or door?
I think it would have a lot to do with the RTA inspectors interpretation.

ha! That's my recently purchased 130. You're right, it is a pointless mod, and loud to boot. The biggest concern is that the exhaust is actually under chassis which is not the best idea - for a 130 especially. The exhaust actually flattens near the chassis as well, so it doesn't maintain the free flowing benefit under the chassis point. I'll be getting the exhaust restored to exit at the rear shortly.

Nice 130!
I can recommend "Hans On" exhausts at Maddington. Hans does a good job, but only accepts cash.
My 3" mandrel exhaust - including custom dump pipe that is a work of art, cost me $500 (but I supplied a few bits and he did it over 2 weeks between jobs).

I guess you've never had to be back to 2nd gear to get up a hill on the highway with a Rover 6 that a Holden engine would go up in top. I guess you've never had to change burned valves in a Rover 6 or had to pay the cost of reconditioning a Rover engine. On second thought a Holden Engine in a Land Rover is about as pointless as an Isuzu engine in a Land Rover.

My old 4wd (not a landrover) had a thin piece of aluminium above the back electric window to keep the dust off.
I took it off, in an attempt to improve it's 16 L /100 fuel economy. Not sure it made any difference.

LOL! Must have been a hell a surprise finding that an old Land Rover was a bit underpowered. As for burned valves and reconditioning, I would say it's all about doing your homework. And tragic as it may be, sometimes cars break down and they cost money to fix. Isuzu engines? Weren't they fitted by Land Rover at the big building they called a factory?
If you want a high performance 4x4, get something like Lamborghini LM002. If you want a cheap one, get a Lada. If you're a Land Rover enthusiast, suck it up and buy a Land Rover.

In my opinion what you drive is the same as what is expressed on the Motorcycle and Tattoo forums I'm in..
It may not be others taste - but it doesnt have to be... Its got to suit YOUR tastes...
I dont agree with a lot of mods, but it is the owners choice to fit them and thats fine - To me, as long as they are safe - Wont endanger my family or friends etc... Then go for it....
I may laugh at "unusual" modifications, but they have the right to do so!

Not to sure how these tanks where set up but a mate of mine had a similar setup in his GQ Patrol. 180 litres or so and each tank worked independantly of each other. Flick a switch on the dash and his factory fuel gauge would read the other tank instead and pump fuel from that tank etc.

It all depends upon the fuel system, the old systems had a single line that went from the tank, through a filter and pump and into the carby. These systems auxiliary tanks were merely switched over with a mechanical fuel switch and if fitted a fuel tank guage switched over with a separate switch on the dash. (SIIa Army are a classic example of these.) More advanced systems had the fuel guage switch in the change over switch. With electric fuel pumps, each tank usually had it's own pump into a manifold connection in a common fuel line. Whichever pump you had running supplied fuel to the engine.
In the full flow systems usually those with injectors fuel is constantly circulating and returning to the tank. Switching both the supply and return lines is more complicated and the simple solution is to have transfer pumps to move the fuel into the main tank from the aux tank. The problem with these systems is when the main fuel pump fails or you hole the main tank, you are immobilised, even though you still have a functional tank and transfer pump.
So is fitting additional tanks innappropriate and is fitting transfer pumps innappropriate. I hardly think so.

That is exactly how my mates patrol was set up and it was running fuel injection on a GM 5.7litre V8 from a Commodore.
I am not sure of the details, however I remember the mechanic joking it had to be built by NASA...due to how complicated it was.

Bob,
I saw the main tank & it was a 120 litre jobby, the others fitted under the driver & passenger seats perhaps 70 litres each??, & before anyone asks, the batteries ( Optima's) were relocated down in a custom compartment at the back passenger end behind the rear wheel .
I'm not sure how it all worked but this Landie was set up for desert touring & the guy I bought it off wanted 3 independant fuel supply systems so that if a fuel pump died he could keep going, there is a giant fuel filter under the bonnet, so I would assume they all supplied the motor- probably had one way valves.
BTW I only mentioned all this as questions were asked about the dash holes :) I think the concept is solid- if you have the cash to splash

When I was young and incredibly stupid I may have been guilty of performing the most pointless modification ever to a LandRover. Back in 1971 during a rebuild of my vehicle after a multiple rollover, I was stuck for a couple of weeks with nothing to do while I saved up for some replacement body panels. Anyway with most of the body and the floor panels removed, the gearbox and transfercase were exposed, and as a couple of weeks earlier I had been impressed when I saw a vintage car with a polished aluminium gearbox, I thought it would be a good idea to do the same to the Landy transmission.
After about a week of rubbing and sanding in my spare time I had a gleaming mirror finish on both the gearbox and transfercase that I was so proud of that I was very reluctant to put the floor panels back in when I finally finished rebuilding the truck. What an idiot, and I didn't do drugs then either:confused:

l fitted the bonnet mounted spare wheel holder and four rubber blocks from my S2a Military LWB to my 84 range Rover and blacked out the bonnet. Try to make it look tougher and not Luxury, the twin snorkels helped too...I liked it ..Gary

Must be a council regulation loophole thing like my cabin. Although it's overlength and overwidth, because it has 4 wheels and axles it's deemed to be transportable and therefore doesn't require a building permit.

Hmm I know what your thinking, what with the family and work I don`t have enough time to think about the finance ? :) Any way look at narrow houses, maybe start with a nice two bedroom cottage ? Yes that is a bloke from Licola. I guessing that that pic falls into the inappropriate category. Not a nice thing to do to a old forward control. But from what I know of the reasons why it was done, he get`s

Unfortunately after recently witnessing how very fragile Defender quarter panels are, these type of accessories are really pointless. Instead of the lamp or lamp guard breaking, the whole corner will just cave in.
