D3 Airconditioning Compressor Failure

Just wondered if anyone had ever had their D3 air conditioning compressor seize?

Mine did this morning, so the compressor pully is not moving at all but the engine will run, so what I can actually see is happening is the serpentine belt is slipping on the seized pully. Obviously I can't drive it or the belt will fail sooner then later and cause other even bigger problems needless to say.

I have been told this is quite a big job to replace the compressor unfortunately.

My questions is has anyone else had to replace a compressor on their D3? And if so roughly how much did it cost? ... that is if I can be so nosey as to ask.

I had mine replaced under warranty at about 40,000 km on my 07 D3 V6. Not seized, just noisy. From memory they had the car overnight.

Hi Terry, If you do a search on my posts I had a complete thread on the events of my A/C failure.
Yes it was expensive but mainly because it most probably won't be just the compressor that needs replacing it may need a new condensor and is about 12-15 hrs work to change out not to mention the system flush and new gas etc.
My final bill was about $2500.00. If you find the thread I started a few months ago it will have an explanation in detail of what happenes and why it's so expensive.
Surpisingly your belt shoudn't slip on the compressor pulley though as when the compressor is siezed it supposed to strip the clutch on the front of the compressor, end result is still the same:(

I think this is the link to the previous thread re AC compressor failure. It would appear that the failure mode, while rare, is a result of not to well thought out green initiatives.

Thanks guys, just read the attached thread and it is obvious that there is no easy or cheap way to fix this problem.

Now I have to find someone who knows what they are doing and can do it quickly otherwise I won't be going to next weekends Aulro gathering. Now that will really annoy the crap out of me if we can't.

Hi Terry. Just a thought but if you can't get the compressor fixed in time then you should be able to strip the clutch mechanisim on the front of the compressor which would allow the pulley to free wheel, you won't have a/c but at least you will be able to drive around without destroying the belt. As I posted earlier that was what happened to mine and I drove over a thousand k's with it stripped as that is what it is designed to do {or at least so I am told}
What ever you do I'd hate to see you miss the LRO gathering:D.

the problem is getting the right pulley.
the benz pulleys are easy to buy seporatly.

Thank you very much Dave,

I pick up the D3 today with a new compressor fitted, I was told by a number of LR outlets that there were no D3 compressors available in the country which I found very frustrating I must admit.

Anyway I spoke with Canberra Motor Works and they had one on the shelf so they have had the D3 for the last two days. Thankfully this means we will be going to the Aulro gathering at JDNSW's place this weekend.

Thanks Yorkie, it's true to say that we are very happy that we will be able to go after all the planning over the last couple of months, also Baz was starting to fret over who he would drink Scotch with ...:lol2: I'm in for a Scotch or two providing there are no green or pink donuts around like happened the last time.

Anyway yes 1000 posts ...so now I'm a Wizard supposedly, don't mind admitting I'm not exactly sure what that means but I have been called much worse over the years. ...;)

It will also be good to put faces to names of many of the other Aulro members that I have got to know through the website over the last couple of years.

Can I ask, if I was standing at the front of the D3 looking into the engine bay, is the A/C compressor the pulley at top right??

If not, what is that bit???
