2/2a identity ?

I went to look at a 109 tray today. It was a 6-cylinder (with the horizontal bar grille), headlights in the centre panel but also headlight apertures in the front of the wings.
The headlamp apertures in the wings had a neatly formed lip and were lower down than on a Series 3 and no recess around them.

No ID plates on the bulkhead (they had been removed), firewall needs replacing, home made front bumper, chassis looked OK from the rear. Difficult to view because it was surrounded by Range Rovers (12 in total).

Just trying to find out more about this one before I say no ......

Assuming factory 6 and grille lights are factory, then '67-'69.

Chassis number should be on the outward facing bit of the rear spring hanger on the back LH spring. This will tell you the model. May need to wire brush it to see the number.

It's an hour's drive from home and to be honest I was overdressed to be crawling all over it today.
The headlamp apertures in the wings were unusual, I was more interested in finding out if the vehicle was a 'bitsa' or whether they came from the factory with the extra headlight apertures in the wings.

There were no production vehicles which had headlights in both the grille and the muguards.

The "bug eye" SIIa models in the USA had the headlamp holes in the grill panel blanked and the headlamp buckets inserted through the front of the mudguards (or should I say fenders). But they didn't have a recess in the front of the mudguards or any sort. This was to comply with new USA design legislation that required Land Rover to move their headlamps to the fenders, but left the CJ Jeep and 40 series Land Cruiser alone.

Ben, I understand pedantry and yes you did say headlamps etc, but to return the pedantry, in Colin's original post he said he has headlamps in the grill and only apertures in the front of the mudguards.

Although I may have to retract the original statement because I can not currently find an image of the original bugeye models only the later SIIa.

Looks like it might be a 'bitsa' or someone has made a very neat job of putting in the holes in the wings.

I already have too many Land Rovers (so I'm told) plus I'm collecting an S3 Diesel parts car at the weekend so I'll leave this one for someone else......
