Hi all, I have just upgraded (I think) to a D4 SE with the sdv6 engine and rear diff, the rest is standard. Now after reading the manual I cannot seem to find any reference to the diff lock. Is this some sort of "Auto" device? Reason is I wanted the diff lock after the traction control eating brakes on my D2A and thought if I can just manually lock the unit then I can save the TC working hard when I know I need the diff lock.

Certainly no buttons in the car !!!!

Automatic. It has an electric clutch operasted by the electronics. You will not notice it but makes some situations easier. Great to have. :D

Full auto like the Centre Diff Lock (CDL)....will turn off and on as required. I think it will beat the TC to the punch at low speed and taking off from a standing start.

If you have the Multi-Function screen on your dash, when you are in the 4WD screen....it's hard to believe I actually own one of these....can never remember the exact terms...LOL.....anyway, in that screen you will see two green 'lock' icons...one representing the CDL, the other, the rear diff. They will turn red when they engage. They switch off and on when needed.....works really well and there is no need for stuffing around with selections. There is also no chance of transmission wind-up.

Relax, you have a great set up.

Hope this helped.

Cheers,

Kev.

The diffs on the D3 & D4 are e-Diffs and work in a completely different way to the traditional 'locking' diff.

Stick it in a suitable Terrain Response program and let the car do the work. ;)

Having seen the difference it made putting a cdl in my D2, I was sceptical about the effectiveness of e-diffs if they need to react rather than just stay locked, but the ULR mechanic said they 'pre-load' depending on what mode you're in.

I've done a bit of mucking around and certainly seems to work at least reasonably well. Impossible to know without being able to compare to mechanical lockers...

I believe the different Terrain Response settings affect how agressively the eDiffs react.

Will the e-diff work without the dial in one of the terrain response settings???

True it does.

Yes I have seen it lock in and out in normal mode on my 4x4 info screen.

Yeah Craig, I don't think you can actually turn off any of the 4WD settings on the recent Discoverys....it's just a matter of tailoring for the environment....so 'normal' is still a setting. Probably works best on the road but often there is no need to select something on the TR unless it's obvious that there will be issues.

I know for a fact that even if you don't have or don't have the screen turned on (to see the locks engage), you can hear the CDL engage in normal mode, so I'm assuming the rear would too.

Cheers,

Kev.
