The D4 HSE )no, not mine, a friends) has 19" rims and there arent any decent off road tyres available as far as we can see. Certainly no affordable ones.

Are there any smaller diameter rims available which will allow a wider tyre choice, but still fit over those huge brake discs ?

The only smaller rims available that will fit over D4 brakes are the special 18" ones that GOE has had cast for them by Compomotive.

I used the Conti Cross Contact AT's. I have found them to be not to much more noisy than the OEM tyres. I have done about 10000klm on them handling wasn't as sharp.

I am currently back on my 20's

It depends how "offroad" your friend wants to get. The General Grabber AT (not the older AT2) are available in the standard 19 inch size and they are an excellent compromise between on road manners and most off-road situations. Available for between $280-$300 each fitted and balanced depending on where you are. Very happy with my set of 5.
