Hi guys,
I am now a happy owner of new SD4 SE (very happy indeed). For the last few months I've been trying to establish how much diesel my new Landy consumes. Driving in Sydney, the best I could achieve is 9.6 l/100km according to the computer for a full tank (trip around 640km).
I am wandering what is your experience. So far I've done only 3000 km. Do you think it is going to get better or worse?
Another question - sometimes driving over sharper bumps I hear unhealthy noise coming from the suspension. Is this normal?
Thank you for the valuable information I've read so far in this forum.:)

I drove mine from Boulia in QLD to Alice Springs via the Plenty Highway and covered 820 kms before the engine went into limp mode. TD4 auto. I thought it should have done better but happy anyway.

When I grow up I want to be just like Mike;)
I want to take my Landy to places far away, driving alone for days on end.
Mike, for me you are true inspiration.

Mate, you don't want any friends either? :)

You'd be glad to hear that my petrol is currently doing about 20L/100km in mostly Melbourne city driving, though the traffic certainly doesn't help.
I don't have a heavy foot either.
Does any other petrol drivers get the same figures, any better or worse?

20L petrol! - God!
It makes me feel better, but nowadays I cannot get below 10.5L diesel. I wander - am I getting reckless or it burns more.

I get 18.3 out of my P38 4.6 in Melbourne traffic!

My wife gets 16.5 L/100Km in her 4.6L P38 in Canberra traffic, while my 4.0L P38 gets 20+.
No idea what the actual figure is for our 2001 TD4 Freebie, but it went from Canberra to Sydney to Sussex Inlet to Batemans Bay to Canberra on one tank and still had fuel left when it got home. That is at least 650Km.
Cheers, Paul.

It's my only real complaint - I did get sold on claims of 7L/100km combined cycle. The best I've EVER had is 7.2, and probably didn't fill it right up. At first I rarely got better than 9.8, but that was fully laden and 110kph. 100kph gets you 8.9. I'm now averaging 8.7 (2persons + luggage + recovery gear) for a mix of rural/hilly/some off-road. That calculation is me/km/diesel bowser. According to the car, that's 8.2!
Tips: cruise control gets you better consumption for uphill, including really steep 30kph gravel. Cruise control for downhill sometimes increases fuel use; I've learned to use a mix of 'cancel cruise' and 'angel gear' to improve consumption. I also coast (in gear) to minimise use of brakes - saves two ways. I use the 'instantaneous consumption' on the instrument panel, to ameliorate the temptation to use all that torque!

Hey Phideaux, thank you for the tips, I am learning. On a recent trip to Canberra, we had only 6.8. Cruise control all the way at 100 to 110kph. Yes it is flat and a freeway, but it makes me happy.
Btw, 8.7 for a mix of rural/hilly/some off-road is great.:)

I struggled to get anything under 8 L/100K, even on big trips with plenty of highway, but perhaps the diesel is loosening up now as my last trip which included quite a bit of soft sand driving had the average down to about 7.2L, so quite happy now.

This was my first big drive in my 2011 FL2 SD4 HSE after picking it up last week ( 15000 km),didn't manage to get what they quote in the owners manual 5.7/ 100km but I'm happy with the 6.8/100km I got coming back on the New England HWY from Byron to Newcastle full of camping gear with back seats folded down. Love the torque on the SD4 the engine bearly revs over 18000 rpm , as much as I love the 6 speed auto I find using the command shift I can take advantage of the torque of the engine in the hilly and windy roads.makes it more fun to drive too.

I have just completed a trip of about 7000ks that included about 80% towing an off road camper, the rest made up of highway, city and off road .Towing speed was generaly between 100 and 110 mostly on the flat straight Stuart highway but with some good head winds . At the end of the trip the trip computer showed 10.5 ltr/100k average ,I suspect it is a bit higher but not much.Very happy with this as my popular 3ltr work fwd does not get that empty doing highway work .

Noted after 10,000kms after the first 10,000km of mixed driving, my 2011 SD4 HSE (bought new) has returned: 10-20,000 = 8.2 l/100; 20-30,000 = 7.9 l/100; 30-40,000 = 7.6 l/100, and so far 40-45,000 is 7.5 l/100 and running.
Looks like it's almost run in, then... ;)

I have a brand new , well 1800 ks 2013 diesel which averages 6.9 litres per 100 on the highway at 110 ks using cruise, 2up with a little gear on board.
I am super impressed with this as cruise always used substantially more more fuel on the old Commodore.
Cant imagine getting any better even when run in. Is it just me or are these are real nice drive particularity on the highway.

Hi, all, at 37,000km I'm still not getting the less than 8L/100km which I envy in other post-er-s. I live in hope. Notably, my dash-computer cheerfully informs me that I'm now averaging 8.2L/100km. The litres I pay for calculates out at over 9L/100km. It has improved slowly as it's been run in.

My 2008 Td4 (86,000km on the clock) manages around the 7.2l/100km on a long journey with cruise control between 100-110. Around town it sits on the mid to high 8's and doesnt head much above that unless its real start stop driving.

Indicated, but set mostly on cruise, I feel pretty accurate as did not have full tank when leaving and fuel left over on return TD4 80klms left.
