I am trying to help a freelander '99 L series Diesel owner and I know nothing about them.
A mechanic has told him he needs to buy the timing tools and belt tensioner tool for the mechanic to do the job, obviously the mechanic does not work on a lot of land rovers.
Are there any suitable substitutes for these?
any help appreciated.

You can use a 6.5mm drill bit for the crank pin and a 9.5mm drill bit for the injector pump. The cam is marked . Use a 6mm nut and bolt to pull back the tensioner plunger.

I did my timing belt yesterday - the only special tools I needed are some sacrificial small sockets (either 8mm or 10mm) to grind down to fit in the small gap to get the timing belt covers off - basic spanners, small sockets, and allen keys are all that are needed - oh - it helps if you do not have piggy fingers.

If you are careful (and as precaution mark everything up) you do not need to use the crankshaft locking pin (it is a bastard to get too and I have not yet seen the hole having done this job a couple of times) but make sure you use the pump injection tool as it will hold everything in place as long as you use no force.

Use a 6mm nut and bolt to pull back the tensioner plunger.

I could not find a long enough bolt - even at a specialist nut and bolt shop - they gave me 600mm of threaded rod that I cut to the required length - is a 1/4 of the price of a bolt - then buy the nut to fit.

It easy to put new belts on one tooth out. I put alignment marks on the pullys and corresponding marks on the old belts (if you are doing the cam belt, the injection pump belt will also need doing). I then transfer these marks to the new belts and triple check that the correct number of teeth exist between the marks.
