Axle Straps

Hi All,
61 Series 2 LWB. This is going to be an easy one!
What is the correct location for axle straps?
My axle straps did not exist - I found 4xmetal plates (one on the inside of the chassis rail, one on the outside of the chassis rail - driver/passenger).
This suggests to me that the strap goes from the outside, down underneath the axle, and then back up to the inside of the chassis.
Does anyone have a photo showing it?
I have seen (on a series 3) a photo - but the axle strap is only connected on the outside of the chassis rail.
I have also been told that you need 4*axle straps (1xdrivers outside, 1xdrivers inside, 1xpassenger outside,1xpassenger inside)

I purchased "axle straps" for a Series 2 - and was only sent 2.

I recently replaced the straps on my Series 3, the original straps were connected to the plates on the outside of the chassis and there were only two straps fitted.

i would think that Series 2 + 2a would be the same :confused:

One strap only for each side.

As above, however unless you are worried about originality, there is no point in replacing them. I removed mine years ago. I have suffered no ill effects, and now have much better wheel travel offroad.

The confusion in the answers can be explained. Axle check straps were fitted to all leaf spring Landrovers, rear only. On the swb they are on the outside of the chassis only. On the lwb they go from outside back to inside front. The plate to protect the brake line from rubbing on the check strap must be fitted.

The purpose of the check straps is to protect the shock absorbers from damage by providing another check on travel. It has been suggested that modern dampers are strong enough not to need this, but the need is likely to become apparent only under extreme circumstances - springs working well, heavily loaded, and damper not working to any extent due to overheating, plus the right sort of bump. But in general, you will get away without them.

FWIW, I had the original military (reconditioned) monroe-wylie rear shocks on my IIA for many years, with no problems (and no check straps). For most of the time I had soft springs, carried heavy loads and did lots of hard offroading, so if they shocks were going to fail it would have been then. I did snap one front shock - but they never had check straps.

The same goes for my father's 88" - no check straps and no problems.

All coil sprung landies have the wheel travel limited by shock absorbers from the factory.
