Just thought I'd post a quick thread on transfer cases - I was chatting to the guy who rebuilt my trannie - I've been doing that a lot lately... Anyway, he also mentioned that he sees quite a few Rangies & BMW's that come in with transfer case issues. I all these cases, he says the oil in them is black and stuffed. A new transfer case will set you back $4K, and individual parts are not available for them.
They only take about a litre of oil, and it is a very easy job to do - It will be on top of my list once I get mine back (tomorrow I think:))
It would probably pay to do the diffs as well I would think. Not sure off the top of my head what oil they take - I'll look it up now I think...
Cheers - Gav

What gearbos are you talking about?
LT95 takes 3.1l of engine oil.

I think it is the NV225? Same as what's in the early BMW X5's. Can't find exact data at the moment on what type of oil, but it only takes a litre of it.

Ah, yes!
Type of oil is important.
Gearbox? Must be gear oil I thought.
It did drive quite a few kilometres before the shims burnt. The transfer case now has the gears in tapered roller bearings.
Gear oil stinks as well. Ten years later I can still smell the gear oil every time I drain the transfer case.
Ok. You can all just stop laughing now. Stop it. No, seriously, stop.

My only question is, you're talking to the guy who rebuilt your tfr who is the same person who says parts aren't available. How's he rebuilding it?

He was chatting with the guy who rebuilt his trannie, now.......just like my wild assumption above, he means transmission.....in his L322 range rover......not transfer case, nor anyones friend they are ashamed to have type trannie

Ah - I see - my other post was not very clear, as Rovercare clarified for me - I had this guy rebuild my transmission - my transfer case is fine - it was someone elses that **** itself. Sorry for the confusion.:)

Do the P38 and the L322 take the same transfer case oil ? if so maybe this is a cheaper option.

I used Castrol SAF-XO in my l322 transfer case. It was supplied by the local Landdrover dealer. You can by it by 1 litre containers from the Castrol distributor approx $25-$30 a litre.

Just having a look through the FFRR forum, on the page on recommended lubricants - Recommended Lubricants - fullfatrr.com Wiki (http://www.fullfatrr.com/wiki/Recommended_Lubricants) Fairly comprehensive list, also shows a Texaco oil that is suitable for the diffs, but I doubt that would be available here in Aus.

Just a quick one - is there anything special about the power steering fluid & brake fluid in these things? Checked the fluids out today, and they are putrid - need to do the power steering and brake fluid ASAP.

PAS fluid is probably the same as the D2, it's a genuine product. Works much better than other stuff. Brake fluid should be to the same DOT standard at least, up to a point I think higher no's are backward compatible but I know some of the newer ones aren't.
